First, the US has tactic nuclear weapons in its arsenal, TLAM-N's (Tomahawk Land attack Missile Nuclear Variant) for example.Nuclear deterrence has always been a deterrent forth US. The assumption being no same country would launch a nuclear attack against the United States because of our ability to detect where the launch came from and this launch a retaliatory nuclear strike at the offending nation. The other , les stable, nuclear powers don't have teh same deterrent perspective. If the US launches a nuclear attack, their response will come in seconds and not minutes. The attack will be against the only nation publicly considering the use of nuclear weapons - Donald Trump's United States government. If any of the countries detects a launch, all will respond, regardless of the "target". Our enemies don't target each other, but they all target the United States.
Donald Trump is not the main worry I have. It's Pete Hegseth. If Hegseth tells Trump that a nuclear attack is required I fear Trump will capitulate without much thought. The President is teh only one that can order a nuclear launch and the SECDEF only has to validate the order is valid, ie from the President.
In an episode of the TV series “24”, a nuclear bomb was detonated in rural California. The hero, Jack, survived, from a distance, hiding behind a rock (or so as I recall). A quickly forgotten plot device used by script writers but, evidently, influential enough that such a scenario is today seriously being considered by real people in real life. More than likely, Trump and Hegseth will drop a nuclear bomb on a remote island or isolated land in Asia. Then they’ll declare it a warning. Ha! By sunup the next day, a similar warning will come from (you name it) somewhere in North America. Boy, will Trump be mad! Fun times ahead.
A bit hyperbolic, but given the current state of senior political leadership a concern. We actually only embraced Mutually Assured Destruction (MAD) 20 years after dropping the first weapons, but the concern given temperament and intellect (or lack thereof) is real.

I remember undertaking nuclear warning exercises/responses in the UK in the 80s, when I ran hospital services.
This is truly frightening. Deterrent is the key for all countries. There is no such thing as a small nuclear attack as a 'warning '.
They had better get that fucking ballroom/ bunker finished soon, to ensure their best friends can accompany them.
This is pure and simple sanctioned murder that will lead to annihilation.
