The Day After: What the Democratic Wave Means for American Democracy
The Verdict Is In. And It Wasn’t Close.
The Jack Hopkins Now Newsletter #1,076: Wednesday, November 4th, 2026..
For two years you were told the fix was in. That the courts were bought, the referees were bribed, the game was over, and the only sensible thing to do was keep your head down and wait for the worst.
Last night, Americans in every corner of this country walked into a voting booth and said: No. We’ll decide that.
And they decided it decisively. Not a squeaker. Not a “wait for the recount.” A sweep. The kind of result that doesn’t need a lawyer to explain it to you.
Here’s what it means, what it doesn’t mean, and what you do next.
What Actually Happened
Strip away the cable-news noise and look at the scoreboard.
The House flipped.
Democrats went in with 214 seats and came out with a majority, winning battlegrounds from Pennsylvania to Texas to Kentucky to Colorado. Hakeem Jeffries is positioned to become the first Black Speaker of the House. (More on Hakeem in an upcoming issue.)
The Senate flipped.
Democrats picked up seven seats: Maine, Iowa, Kansas, Ohio, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Texas. Read that list again. Kansas. South Carolina. Texas, where James Talarico beat Ken Paxton and Gina Hinojosa unseated Greg Abbott…the first statewide Democratic wins there in 32 years.
Governors’ mansions flipped.
Amy Acton beat the Trump-backed Vivek Ramaswamy in Ohio. Keisha Lance Bottoms took Georgia. Aaron Ford unseated an incumbent in Nevada.
And the exit polls tell you why: Trump’s approval sat at 38 percent, a record low for a president at midterms, and 89 percent of voters said the cost of living drove their vote. Add an unpopular war with Iran…and you have a country that stopped arguing about politics…and started doing arithmetic.
The markets agreed. Stocks jumped more than 1,000 points on the news.
Why This Is Bigger Than One Election
Here’s the thing nobody on television will say plainly, so I will.
The question of the last two years was never really about tax policy or tariffs. It was whether the machinery of American self-government still worked…when someone leaned on it hard enough. Whether elections still counted. Whether a president with no check on him would ever face one.
Last night answered that question. The machinery works. It creaked…it groaned…it was sued and smeared and told it was rigged…and it delivered a verdict anyway.
Starting in January, that verdict has teeth:
Subpoena power changes hands. Every committee chair, every investigation, every demand for documents now comes from the party that ran on accountability.
The confirmation pipeline closes. No more rubber stamps for judges, cabinet secretaries, or inspectors general chosen for loyalty. Chuck Schumer has already promised “legislative razor wire” against the White House. (More on Chuck later, too.)
The power of the purse is back. Wars, emergency declarations, and agency purges all run on money Congress appropriates. Congress just got a new landlord.
Red states are not locked. Texas, Kansas, South Carolina, and Ohio just proved that no map is permanent and no voter is owned.
That last point…is the one that should keep the other side up at night. Fear is a powerful motivator exactly once. After that, people get tired of being afraid…and they get busy. We LOVE to be busy.
Now the Hard Part. Don’t Skip It.
I’d be lying to you if I said this was over, and I don’t lie to my readers.
A wounded administration with two years left…and nothing to lose…is more dangerous…not less. Expect the following, and expect it fast:
The results will be disputed. The playbook was previewed in Alaska, where the administration sued to block certification before a single vote was counted; a federal judge threw it out. Mississippi is sitting on a margin under 100 votes. Watch for “fraud” to become the word of the month.
The executive pen will get a workout. Executive orders, emergency declarations, and personnel firings don’t require a vote. A Congress that can’t pass bills past a veto can still investigate, defund, and refuse to confirm…but…it can’t stop everything.
The enablers aren’t going anywhere. The donors, the media operations, the loyalists embedded in agencies, and the judges confirmed over the last four years will still be there on January 4th. Some of them…will spend two years…trying to make a Democratic Congress look chaotic and ineffective.
The lame-duck session is live ammunition. The old Congress holds the gavel until January. Two months is plenty of time for mischief.
None of this is a reason for despair. It’s a reason for attention. The voters just handed the country a tool. Tools don’t work by themselves.
What You Do Now
You don’t celebrate for a week.
We celebrate for a night or two… and then we get back to work, because the people who lost last night…already have.
Call your new representative before they’re sworn in and tell them what you expect. Keep your eye on the certification fights. Keep your subscription to whoever told you the truth when it was unpopular. And…remember the lesson of Texas: the places you were told to write off…are the places where the next win is hiding.
The United States of America just reminded the world that it still answers to its people. That’s not the end of the story. It’s the part where the story gets good.

Back soon.

P.S. Thirty-two years. That’s how long Texas waited to elect a Democrat statewide. If you’re tempted to think something can’t be done, that’s your number. Oh, and the numbers might have grown since I wrote this this morning, as Alaska and Mississippi were still uncalled at that time. If so, even better.

Booyah🙌🏽.. Jack I’ll take the win today and back to work tomorrow keeping our country safe and sane and trying to hold the line.. until that Fat Orange Fuck and his cronies are out of office.. #HoldingFast!!
I think those of us that follow you know already we have an uphill battle for the next 2 years and can't just sit back. They are going to try and make everything harder. Of course with drumpf's obvious mental and physical decline he may not make the next 2 years and we will end up with vance. If when we get our people in we can start with getting rid go kegsbreath. Hopefully we won't lose anymore military personnel.
