Just prior to publication…on Day 30 (today) Trump called for scrapping the Senate filibuster to end the shutdown by simple majority…by using the “nuclear option.” Senate Majority Leader John Thune has rebuffed the idea.

Most Americans have heard that phrase.
Almost none know what it actually means.
And Trump is counting on that.

So let’s make it unmistakably clear:

What “the nuclear option” really means

The Senate runs on a rule that protects the minority from being steamrolled:
You need 60 votes to move major legislation forward.

That’s the filibuster threshold.

The nuclear option is the procedural trick that lets the majority party blow that rule to pieces and change Senate rules with a simple majority…51 votes.

No negotiation.
No compromise.
No minority protection.
No checks.
No brakes.

It’s called “nuclear” because once you detonate it…the fallout reshapes the entire legislative branch forever.

Why Trump wants it NOW

Because with the shutdown hitting 30+ days…and pressure mounting…the nuclear option becomes the perfect authoritarian shortcut.

If Republicans nuke the filibuster:
