An Autocrat is at the Helm: How Do You Want This to Turn Out? Your Silence Today Could Seal the Future of Freedom Tomorrow
The Jack Hopkins Now Newsletter #308
In any free country, democracy is a delicate balance…and the actions of those in power can profoundly shape the trajectory of the nation.
At various points in history…leaders have risen with ambitions to consolidate power… often attempting to shift the political system toward authoritarianism or outright dictatorship.
When these efforts are met with resistance or apathy…the results can vary...but history shows us that the outcomes of such struggles are rarely neutral.
Every choice made in these moments…whether by citizens…lawmakers…or other institutions…shapes the future of the country…often in irreversible ways.
The overarching question in any country at a pivotal moment is:
How do you want this to turn out, and what are you willing to do to help make that happen?
Do you want to preserve freedom, democracy…and the rule of law…or do you want to allow a shift toward autocracy…with all the implications that entails?
You, as a member of society, have the power to make that decision.
However, it's crucial to understand that inaction…for failing to decide… is itself a choice. And like all choices, it carries consequences.
The Autocrat’s Playbook: What Happens Historically?
When a free country faces an autocrat attempting to impose a dictatorship, the outcome is usually determined by a mix of factors:
The strength and unity of democratic institutions…the level of public resistance…the role of the military…and the support or opposition of other global powers.
Historically, the path from democracy to dictatorship is fraught with resistance… challenges…and violence.
Though the details and dynamics differ from case to case, the overall patterns remain disturbingly consistent.
Here are the main outcomes that have historically followed such attempts to shift a nation toward dictatorship:
1. Resistance and Rebellion: The Fight for Freedom
In many instances, when an autocrat makes a play for power…the people do not passively accept the shift.
In fact, one of the most common historical reactions to authoritarian attempts is public resistance, often in the form of mass protests…strikes…and civil disobedience.
This is particularly true in societies where democracy is deeply valued, and citizens feel a strong attachment to their freedoms.
Resistance can come from multiple angles: political leaders…social activists…labor movements…and ordinary citizens all play a part in pushing back against autocratic overreach.
These movements can be peaceful or violent…depending on the severity of the government's crackdown on dissent.
The fall of the Berlin Wall, the ousting of dictators in Tunisia…Egypt…and other countries during the Arab Spring…and the democratic movements in countries like Hong Kong in more recent years are all examples of how ordinary people can rise against perceived authoritarianism.
However, the outcome of resistance is not always guaranteed.
Repressive governments often respond to resistance with force, and many democratic movements face violent suppression.
In these moments, the future of democracy becomes a battle of wills…between the will of the people and the will of the state.
The outcome often hinges on the unity and commitment of the opposition and the willingness of the government to escalate violence or offer concessions.
2. The Weakening of Institutions: The Road to Autocracy
One of the most insidious consequences of an autocrat’s attempt to consolidate power is the weakening of the nation’s democratic institutions.
A democracy relies on the rule of law…the independence of the judiciary…a free press… and robust political opposition to function properly.
Autocrats typically target these institutions early on…undermining their ability to hold the government accountable and ensuring that power is centralized in the hands of a few.
We’re Watching this Now, Are We Not?
For example, autocrats very often attempt to dissolve or control the legislature…pack the courts with sympathetic judges…or use state-controlled media to control the narrative and manipulate public opinion.
They Do What We Are Watching Donald Trump Attempt to Do
Over time, this erosion of checks and balances can make it much easier for an autocrat to solidify their power and restrict freedoms.
Once democratic institutions are compromised…the chances for restoring a functioning democracy become significantly harder…if not impossible.
The gradual slide from democracy to authoritarianism often starts with seemingly small compromises…passing emergency laws…curbing freedom of speech…or suppressing dissent.
Yet, over time, these incremental steps can become entrenched…making it difficult for the population to reclaim their freedoms without significant upheaval.
When institutions are weakened…the power of the state grows unchecked…and the country begins to lose the very things that made it a free society.
3. Military Coup or Intervention: The Role of Force
In certain historical instances, particularly in countries where the military holds significant influence…the rise of an autocrat can prompt military intervention.
The military, either in support of or in opposition to the autocrat…often becomes a decisive factor in the political struggle.
In some cases, the military might stage a coup…overthrowing the existing government and installing a military dictatorship.
This has occurred in various nations over the past century…especially in Latin America, Africa, and parts of Asia.
The military’s decision on whether to support or oppose an autocrat can be influenced by a variety of factors…including the country’s political dynamics…the autocrat’s control over key institutions…and the military’s own interests
.At this very moment in the United States of America, this is the question we all wish we all had the answer to:
Which Would Our Military Support in this Hypothetical Situation?
The truth is, no one knows for sure.
While military intervention might seem like a solution to a political crisis, it often leads to more instability and repression.
Military regimes…while sometimes promising to restore order…rarely restore democratic governance in the long term.
At least in the long-run, history has shown us that when the military gets involved (on either side of the fence) things can go from bad…to worse.
Instead, they often solidify their own power….using the threat of force to maintain control.
The long-term consequence of military-led dictatorships is often a prolonged period of authoritarian rule…marked by human rights abuses… social unrest…and economic decline.
4. International Intervention: The Global Response
When a country attempts to transition to dictatorship…international intervention is sometimes an option.
In today’s interconnected world…global powers and international organizations like the United Nations often become involved in efforts to resist authoritarianism.
Economic sanctions…diplomatic pressure…and…in extreme cases, military intervention can be used to deter or stop the consolidation of autocratic power.
The success of international intervention depends largely on the strategic interests of the global powers involved.
If the country in question is of geopolitical importance, major powers might take a more active role in curbing the rise of dictatorship.
However, international efforts can be controversial and may not always be effective, especially if the autocrat has strong support domestically or is backed by other powerful nations.
5. Gradual Acceptance or Collapse: The Autocrat's Victory
In some instances, the autocrat is able to consolidate power successfully. Over time, they may suppress dissent…co-opt or destroy opposition, and create a narrative that justifies their rule.
This can be a slow, insidious process…where the public is either co-opted or forced into compliance. The once vibrant democratic institutions may crumble under the weight of authoritarian rule…and the country can slide into a state of permanent dictatorship.
In these cases, the people may slowly lose hope for the restoration of democracy.
Will We…As a Nation…Accept This? That’s the Unknown.
Some may even come to accept the autocrat’s rule as a new reality…especially if the regime provides stability or economic prosperity.
However, history shows that autocratic regimes often lead to long-term instability… corruption…and societal repression.
The initial victory of the autocrat may give way to eventual collapse…either through external pressure…internal uprisings…or systemic breakdowns in governance.
The Consequences of Inaction
When an autocrat attempts to establish a dictatorship, the historical outcomes are remarkably consistent.
Resistance, weakening of institutions…military intervention…international pressure…and eventual acceptance or collapse are the primary avenues through which these struggles unfold.
The real question you must ask yourself is: “How do I want this to turn out, and what am I willing to do to help make that happen?”
You have the power to decide…through action…through advocacy…and through participation in democratic processes. But understand that inaction, or allowing the autocrat to succeed without resistance, is itself a decision.
That decision carries its own consequences, and history has shown that once a dictatorship is established…it is incredibly difficult to undo.
The time to act is now.
The fate of the nation hangs in the balance, and your choices…whether we choose to stand for freedom and democracy or allow autocracy to take root…will determine the future for generations to come.
You must ask yourself: “How do I want this to turn out, and what am I willing to do to make that happen?”
Have a good evening. I appreciate you.
Best,
Jack
