You Jack are absolutely right about this and your analysis. It’s apparent the Admin doesn’t care, it seems part of their agenda including P 2025. What we can do is let those who will listen that can do something about it through Governors/Congress/the courts possibly. Just a thought! Thank you Jack especially working so tirelessly for all of us and for your service in the Navy, grateful as always.

Jack Hopkins's avatar

Joan...thank you...that means a lot. Truly.

And...I think you've landed on the most useful response available right now: pressure at the levels that can actually STILL move...governors and members of Congress especially... since so much of CDC's funding flows out to state health departments...and state leaders have REAL standing to push back.

The courts may matter too as some of this gets challenged.

The connection you draw to the broader blueprint...is a fair observation...reporting has noted that SEVERAL of these changes track that playbook.

Thanks for reading so closely, Joan... for thinking about what's actionable....rather than just despairing...and for the kind words.

Jack…you’ve hit the nail squarely on the head! We’re now in grave danger and face an even worse situation than we faced with Covid. When Covid arrived we thankfully had Dr. Fauci heading up the fight, despite Trump’s truly idiotic ideas, intelligence prevailed, and for the most part things finally began to function as they should, although too many people died due to the delay in warning and preparing the country. I watched the reports coming out of China in the autumn of 2019 with growing alarm, and began preparing in late January for what I believed to be the inevitable arrival of COVID in this country…we were ready when lockdown came in late March. At the helm of the multiple departments set up to protect the nation’s health now sits a man totally unqualified, not only by lack of education in this field, but also because of the quackery he does believe in, despite lacking any basis in hard science!

In a world where we are so closely linked, the destruction of the CDC, NIH, USAID seems to me to be beyond insane, and only another means in which to destroy this country…and unfortunately that seems to be the ultimate goal of that Trump is hell bent on carrying out. Thankfully California, Oregon, Washington and Hawaii have banned together to fund their own “CDC” and even hiring some of the scientists who lost their jobs, or resigned when the funding cuts were made, which gives me some sense of comfort, but it isn’t enough! We live in a world rapidly changing and more interconnected than ever in history! With the permafrost melting who knows what viruses, bacteria may lurk that have been frozen eons and things to which our species has no immunity. Now is not the time for less funding, but more…now is not the time for turning away, turning inward and not staying engaged and aware, but for an increased vigilance and involvement! As always, thanks for “listening!” #HoldFast…or at least trying to!

Jack Hopkins's avatar

Christie...thank you for this...and for sharing your own story.

The image of you watching the reports out of China...in late 2019...and quietly preparing your household weeks before lockdown is striking; THAT...is the instinct this whole article is about...just at the individual scale.

Early warning...acted on EARLY...changes outcomes.

The detail about West Coast states pooling resources...to build their own public health capacity....and rehire displaced scientists...is REAL...and worth the cautious comfort you take from it... though, as you say...a patchwork isn't a substitute for a national system.

Your closing is the RIGHT note: the answer to institutional retreat is ENGAGEMENT...not withdrawal.

Thank you for reading so thoughtfully...and for "trying"...that's all ANY of us can do.

Jack, I grew up around doctors & nurses, always fascinated with medicine, and weeks before we were locked down in 2020 the headlines coming out of China were alarming, to say the least! Only weeks before we were locked down I was sitting talking with a friend, who is also a doctor, about the likelihood of pandemics on our near horizon…and the fear both of us have about what is lurking in the permafrost, that may be in our future.

I learned from history that isolation is never a good approach to anything…and so I pay attention to not only local, state, national news, but also what is happening across our planet…the “butterfly effect” is real!!!

Thanks for all you are doing Jack!!

Christie

Jack Hopkins's avatar

Christie, thank you for this...and for being someone who pays attention across all those levels.

That conversation you describe with your doctor friend...weeks before lockdown...is EXACTLY the kind of early signal-reading that matters.

The people who saw 2020 coming weren't psychic; they were just watching...and watching WIDELY.

Your point about isolation never being the answer...is the heart of it.

In a world this interconnected...turning inward doesn't make the threats smaller ...it just makes us slower to SEE them.

The permafrost worry is one I'd file under "reasonable thing to keep an eye on" rather than imminent forecast...BUT... the broader instinct...stay aware...stay engaged...watch the whole board...is exactly right.

Thanks for reading and for caring this much!

Maybe we actually do need a shadow government on our behalf.

Christie's avatar

I think that is what Gavin Newsom, and California have been working toward…native Californian here and have never, ever been happier to be one!!!

Sher''s avatar

I don't blame you! 😊

Toni Denton's avatar

I am always thankful I live in Washington and this is another reason why - not to mention the west coast.

Terry O’Reilly's avatar

I agree, Tom, live in Washington, too. But just remember Seattle, not NYC or other east coast cities who had the first US cases, because of travelers arriving from China. We’re better off than many but not protected and informed now like we were during COVID

Terry O’Reilly's avatar

Sorry, Toni, misread your name

Toni Denton's avatar

No worries. And keeping all that in mind. Thanks much Terry.

Christie's avatar

California, Oregon and Washington and Hawaii…great states! The West Coast is, IMO, the best coast…though I do love a lot about the East coast, I am happy, even with earthquakes and all, to live here!

Toni Denton's avatar

Oh me too. I am in the upper left corner of Washington which has experienced a very low level of "disturbance" so far. I have been in Washington most of my life. Always had to come back.

Sue P's avatar

The CDC in February of that year posted a preparedness list of food essentials, etc. Stock up. Then, it was removed.

Sher''s avatar

I noticed...and specifically..it's the Trump Administration and its minions who are dismantling it. What the countermeasures are besides the obviously failing ones are...I don't know. States may have to take on that role. I can just imagine those mixed results...😒

Jack Hopkins's avatar

Sher'...you're right to name it plainly...and the state-level question is the realistic one... some states will have the resources and will to step in...others won't...and THAT patchwork...is EXACTLY the mixed result you're picturing.

The West Coast states...pooling their own public health capacity....is one model already taking shape...but...a fifty-state quilt of uneven coverage is NO substitute for a coordinated national system...especially when pathogens...do NOT stop at state lines.

No tidy answer from me either, honestly. But...naming the problem CLEARLY...is its own kind of countermeasure...you can't pressure for a fix....you can't describe.

Thanks for reading.

Sher''s avatar

True..and thanks!

Christie's avatar

I don’t expect the “Red” states to do much proactively to protect their citizens…they never have in the past, they have always sort of piggybacked on the backs of the other more forward thinking ones!

Sher''s avatar

I agree…that's what I was inferring by ‘ mixed results’. I'm sorry that it's true….but you're right. We'd have to just take care of ourselves like we did during part of the covid pandemic. The Blue Northeast had to form a coalition to get PPE's and Vaccines.

Elizabeth Goodden's avatar

No, the Red states will just find a way to grift their citizens about it!

HKJANE's avatar

Jack is correct.

File the date: May 25, 2026. The institutions designed to detect the next pandemic — the surveillance networks, the coordination systems, the global partnerships built on trust and time — are being weakened during a period of increasing biological risk. Not decreasing. Increasing.

This is the historical pattern Jack is identifying: civilizations dismantle the systems that work because working systems are invisible. Prevention has no constituency. No one runs for office on the outbreak that never reached your city.

Jack is correct that this is not a public health story. It is a story about whether expertise still has authority inside the institutions that govern collective survival. When loyalty replaces competence, the failure is not immediate. It is distributed. Quiet. Accumulating. Until the moment it is not.

Nature does not negotiate with ideology. It simply continues.

#HOLDFAST

Jack Hopkins's avatar

Jane...this is beautifully put...you've distilled the argument better than I did in places.

"Prevention has no constituency" is the WHOLE problem in four words; that's the structural trap underneath all of it.

Working systems are invisible...so...they're politically cheap to cut and catastrophically expensive to lose...and the failure doesn't announce itself....it accumulates...quietly...until a real crisis exposes all of it at once.

Thank you for reading this closely and for thinking it through with such clarity.

Call me crazy, but I think RFKjr wants Americans to die. It is part of the AI plan. The billionaires don't want to pay for all of the out of work people, no matter how many times they spout off about a "Universal Basic Income". I would not be shocked if the next pandemic came out of one of our bioweapon labs. Maybe that is why all the billionaires have been building bunkers. Obviously, I have no facts to support this.

Jack Hopkins's avatar

Charli...thank you for reading and for being candid that this is speculation...I appreciate that honesty.

The documented problem is real: detection capacity is being cut...expertise is being pushed aside...and that genuinely raises risk.

That's worth your anger and your attention. It doesn't require a hidden extermination plan to be frightening...the ordinary version...institutions weakened through short-sightedness and ideology...is the actual danger here...and it's the one we can still do something about.

Thanks for trusting me with the unfiltered version of your worry!

Toni Denton's avatar

Not crazy. See Heritage.

Roberta's avatar

Jack, I have said since Day 1 that the most dangerous person besides Trump in this regime is RFK, Jr. He didn't have the smarts or the backbone to stand up to Trump and say NO, we are not dismantling USAID, NO, we are not pulling out of WHO. And, yes, most Americans are not paying attention because most do not travel outside of our country or read or hear about things outside our country. I remember an example I read in a psych textbook about people's reactions, basically, if you hear about a flu outbreak overseas, you gloss over it. If you hear about a flu outbreak in a state on the other coast, you might take notice. If you hear about a flu outbreak in your community, you might start taking precautions. But it's only when the flu hits your own household do you really begin to understand what is happening. And, of course, with a pandemic, that's too late. #HoldingFast

Jack Hopkins's avatar

Roberta...that psychology textbook example is a sharp one.

It gets right at the heart of the article...the flu overseas you gloss over....the flu on the far coast you notice...the flu in your house you finally understand...and by then it's too late.

That's exactly the gap early-warning systems exist to CLOSE. Distance....fools us into thinking we have time....we do NOT.

Your underlying point RFK Jr point lands: leadership that won't push back...and a public that tunes out anything beyond its borders...is a genuinely risky combination...and disease surveillance abroad really is homeland security.

Thank you for reading so thoughtfully.

And it might be coming sooner than anyone thinks. Read a WHO alert that the ebola outbreak is getting beyond their ability to manage it. and the US is asleep at the switch.

Jack Hopkins's avatar

Nancy...you're right to flag this.

It's real...and it's serious. WHO declared the Ebola outbreak in eastern DRC and Uganda a public health emergency of international concern on May 17...and its director-general has openly voiced alarm at the "scale and speed" of the spread...well over 500 suspected cases now...and...it's the Bundibugyo strain...which has NO vaccine and NO cure.

An outbreak like that...in a conflict zone with weak follow-up...is EXACTLY the scenario the article is about.

Your "asleep at the switch" instinct is worth watching.

NK's avatar

HAVE. Saw it before RFKJr. How ANYONE can " confirm" someone that is so anti science.

Vaccines are the support that has kept our country alive. Encouraging DEATH seems like not a good plan when it wasn't that long ago people were in " iron lungs" from POLIO.

Trapped in a MACHINE that BREATHES for the patient.

AND people have let RFKjr CRASH AROUND DISPENSING DEATH.

The same with other agencies. Do people know they DISMANTLED THE FOREST SERVICE?? AFTER OVER 100 YEARS PROTECTING OUR FORESTS, NATIONAL PARKS, PUBLIC LANDS. LOGGING 800 YEAR OLD TREES.

PUTTING COPPER MINING NEXT TO PUBLIC LAND. USING " EMINENT DOMAINE" TO INSTALL ENORMOUS DATA CENTERS. TEARING DOWN PEOPLE'S HOUSES TO DO SO.

"FIRED" 53,000 FOREST WORKERS.

Giving MILLIONS OF ACRES OF PUBLIC LANDS, NATIONAL PARKS, TO " EXTRACTORS."

Strikes me as "odd" that people who do this DISMANTLING don't understand that they, and their loved ones, can be killed by what they are letting loose.

AND CONGRESS LET THEM DO IT.

People must not see this as TEASON, but it is. 😡😠🗽🇺🇲🇺🇦

Jack Hopkins's avatar

NK...thank you for reading and for caring this fiercely.

The anger here is coming from a real place....and I don't want to wave it away.

The vaccine point is where you're on STRONG ground. The polio comparison isn't hyperbole...iron lungs were the lived reality before that vaccine...and that history is EXACTLY why a science-skeptical posture at the top of our health agencies worries career experts so much.

That's the documented danger...and it's frightening enough on its own.

Thank you for trusting me with the unfiltered version.

This is the What. But .. Why is this destruction being carried out?

Is this another move to shrink government? Free up more taxpayer $ to slide to billionaires? Eugenics? Reduce the populations of minority and working class? All of the above?

I am thinking - and have been for a while - all of the above.

I became alarmed when USAID was dismantled for stupid reasons by stupid, ignorant power drunk idiots. It is rare for the US to do something that is not in its own best interest and USAID was not one of those rare things. It was absolutely for us, with very talented dedicated people, which also kept the world safer. Win-win. But trump is too dim to understand that and Heritage seems to want to thin out the population even more. I fear we are too far down the rabbit hole and have been encouraging everyone in my life to use masks and wipes like we did for covid.

Thank you for this Jack. I fear what will happen here emotionally (violently), in lost lives, economically, etc. if we have another quarantine when we have no one competent at a national level to help. All the younger Dr. Faucis have been fired or resigned. We are in trouble.

Elizabeth Goodden's avatar

Good quality n-95 masks are literally the cheapest lifesaver you can buy. Commit to wearing them, for yourself and your loved ones safety!

Toni Denton's avatar

It is all we use. House, cars, pockets, purse. Thank you, though, for making the effort. I appreciate it very much.

Jan Moon's avatar

Problem is our so-called president never did take COVID seriously. And I don't see him giving the two viruses out there more than a cursory glance. Plus, we have hapless and dangerous RFK, Jr who is busy badmouthing preventive measures and arranging for little kids die of Measles. Strange that this prez was prez during COVID and now with Hantavirus and EBOLA . It's scary as hell, and I don't see a whole lot of alarm over it yet, especially from the government and the media.

Karen's avatar

Thank you. Agree completely.

Sara Goodnick's avatar

On top of this horrifying dismantling of the protections is that our health care system is plunging towards a third-world level. Insurance companies’ algorithms determine how patients are treated, not their doctors, and those same doctors have short time limits set by those companies for seeing each patient. #HoldFast
