Thank you for this. I really have run out of words to describe that sorry excuse of protoplasma that is residing in the White House and the disgusting fact of him sitting behind the storied Resolute Desk. I agree with all you have said. I will channel the anger and keep as clear of head that I can.

Thank you for saying this, Linn...and for saying it honestly.

Anger like the kind you’re feeling is not a flaw. It’s a signal. It’s the nervous system registering that something fundamental is out of alignment.

The mistake people make isn’t having that anger...it’s letting it yank the steering wheel.

What matters...is exactly what you said next: channeling it while keeping a clear head.

That combination is rare. And it’s powerful.

Anger...without clarity...burns out fast.

Clarity...without anger...never moves anything.

But when you hold both at once...something different happens: you stop reacting...and start applying pressure where it counts.

And here’s the quiet truth most people don’t want to hear: the people who end up shaping how this period is remembered....are almost NEVER the loudest ones. They’re the ones who stay lucid...keep their footing...and refuse to let outrage turn them sloppy.

You’re doing the right thing...by refusing to give that man more control over your internal state than he already has externally.

Stay sharp.

Stay boring...when it matters.

And...don’t underestimate how much leverage comes from simply not losing your head... when others...DO.

That’s how real damage gets done...to the RIGHT targets.

For those not familiar with Minneapolis, this incident happened in the same area where George Floyd was murdered. It's a powder-keg under the best of circumstances and the riots are still fresh in our memories. I hope MPD is involved and I hope the Hennepin County Attorney charges the shooter with murder. I saw pictures with FBI present that's another WTF moment ... they've got no business there unless requested my MPD or Mayor Frye.

My guess is that because ICE is a federal agency the FBI and DOJ will have jurisdiction over any possible crime committed by an ICE goon. At least until MN or the city fights back on that.

Those of us who remember Kent State knew this outcome was inevitable. This is the absolutely scariest time of my life, and I am over eighty. States must begin to charge these ICE officers with murder, and other state level crimes they are committing on a daily basis.

No one, NO ONE, voted for Steven Miller or Russell Vought, yet they seem to be in charge of this hideous situation. Is there any state charges which could be brought against them for recklessly endangering the public over and over? Since Congress won't act, we really do not have a functioning Constitution, and must rely on local/state governments to keep us safe.

I can’t respond yet. This happened beside the home of a dear friend’s son’s home. He witnessed the entire thing, and Mayor Frey is correct when he calls the official government response bullshit. I know these kids to be dedicated, intelligent (scientists, fer cryin’ out loud)who are part of a well-organized neighborhood group whose job it is to make noise so their Hispanic and Somali neighbors know when there’s trouble lurking. The woman who died was a legal observer. The videos of the incident are clear. I’m too close to this one. Gotta give it a bit of time.

What you say is true, Jack.

I hope they managed to get their teenaged daughter through all that mess (down their one-way street) without her getting too upset.

She has strict instructions about her school pick-up specific to this day.

And this is just one family.

Jack Hopkins's avatar

Rae, thank you for trusting me with something this close and this raw.

You’re doing exactly the right thing by not responding yet. That instinct...to pause when you’re inside the blast radius...isn’t avoidance. It’s judgment.

It’s respect for the people involved...and frankly...it’s how you keep your words from doing accidental harm.

What you described isn’t abstract politics. It’s proximity. Faces. Names. A street you know. A kid you care about trying to get home safely...on a day that should never have required “special instructions.” That...changes everything.

And...you’re right to say this isn’t just “one incident.” It’s one family… and another… and another.

That’s how this stuff actually lands...not as headlines...but as stress handed directly to children...neighbors...legal observers...people who showed up believing the rules still meant something.

You don’t owe anyone commentary while you’re holding that.

There’s also something important in what you said...that should NOT get lost: these weren’t reckless people. These were organized...disciplined neighbors...doing the unglamorous work of looking out for each other...and making noise so others could stay safe.

That’s civic responsibility in its most BASIC, human form. The fact that THAT... is what got crushed...is part of why this hurts the way it does.

Take the time you need. Let the nervous system settle. Words written too close to the wound....often miss the truth by just enough to matter.

When you’re ready...when you have distance...not numbness...your voice will land harder... not softer. Because it won’t be rage talking. It’ll be clarity...forged by restraint.

For now...holding concern for that teenage girl...that family...that street...that’s not weakness. That’s orientation. That’s YOU...staying human...in a moment that’s trying very hard to strip that away.

One family matters.

That’s the whole point.

We’ll talk again when the time is right!

The next Democratic Congress needs to hold hearings on ICE and pass legislation either abolishing it or severely restricting its actions. Cutting its budget drastically would be a good first step. State and local governments need to prosecute ICE agents aggressively who commit crimes, and the families of victims need to sue both DHS and the individual agents. Make them pay.

I agree! ICE agents also need to be properly trained on de-escalation. It must be mandatory. I recently read that their training time had dropped from several months to just "47" days. Another disgusting t-rumpism. A plague upon them all.

Robert I am thinking they do not want Ice agents to be trained in de-escalation. That lack is a tool that Noem knows stirs things up more, make their presence feel more unsteady, raw, and unpredictable to us. trump wants a pitched battle in the streets so he can declare martial law, outlaw free speech, demonstrations, voting and anything else he can think of. We cannot go there. We must help those we know and those who comment who want to stoke the fires - to de-escalate themselves and their rhetoric. We will suffer the most from it.

Pacing around my house mumbling to myself and crying is all I can do right now. I can't remember being this furious. Fortunately I am alone so the worst thing I can do is throw things. But I intend to watch and see if there's anything I can do to channel this rage for good. Or revenge. I'll figure something out. Thanks for writing this. I need to read it again because I was yelling at my laptop while I was reading the first time. And I'm scared to death that Steven Miller will get his wish.

First time I’ve been on Sub when something hugely newsworthy was taking place.. spent the day getting off of my bad hips and tuned in.. phone, tablet and PC. It was fascinating to hear former and future pundits speculate, in real time. Watching the videos and beginning to hear statements from witnesses when they narrated the laughably tragic propaganda version via Kristy Gnome. And then the doddering, dangerous, clueless Don. Un-fucking-believable. And it hasn’t even really gotten a full head of steam yet.

I was absolutely pissed when I saw the different videos and the lack of concern that appeared to be there. I also am pissed and DHS ice barbie and that other gut bognino or something like that claiming she was endangering the ice lives when she was just ring to leave like the car before her. The ice guy just got right in front of the hood and fired thru the windshield. Then I thought about the woman did she have kids, a spouse, other family members? Was she a person of color? How will her family find out? What f they saw it on TV before authorities could notify them? And this brought back the Chicago night raid on the apartments with the helicopters. Ot almost make someone not there have PTSD. I know when ice barbie was given the job there would be deaths...anyone that can shot their own dog in cold blood ...what's the saying first it is harming animals and then it becomes harming humans...

This essay is one of the most important readings for all of us. Trump, being the malignant narcisssist/psychopath that he is, loves to sow chaos and raw emotion (emotion he really can't feel unless the stimulation is excessive and extremely strong) and how he and Miller use ICE is designed to satisfy their gratification needs. Sick fucks that they are.

This article allows all who reads it- the Exact reasons ICE behaves the way they do. And the more we understand their base of actions & the way they operate

the better off we are to push back.

Mid afternoon I called my Republican Fascist House Representative Kiley District 3CA about this needless killing by ICE. I also added that once again the Trump Regime are lying full tilt.

Noem is spewing a fabrication that will not hold up in court. I told Kiley that since he & his fellow Congressional Republicans are supporting a Stasi like Federal government Department - they are completely complicit in this killing. And the voters will not forget .

Jack Hopkins's avatar

Lillian, thank you for doing two hard things at once: learning...and acting.

You’re exactly right about the article’s purpose. It’s not there to inflame...it’s there to strip away mystique. Once people understand why ICE behaves the way it does...its incentives... its internal logic...its permission structure...the fear starts to loosen its grip.

Power feeds on confusion. Understanding starves it.

And what you did by calling Kiley...matters more than most people realize. Not because you “changed his mind” in that moment...but because you forced accountability into the RECORD.

You named the lie. You named complicity. You made it CLEAR... this isn’t abstract policy to voters...it’s bodies...families...and courts that will eventually weigh the evidence.

You’re also right about Noem. Statements like that aren’t made because they’re true...they’re made...because they’re meant to run out the clock.

They’re banking on distraction...exhaustion...and the hope that outrage burns itself out ...before facts are adjudicated. History shows that tactic FAILS...when people stay focused and keep receipts.

One thing I want to reflect back to you...because it’s important: you didn’t call in a froth.

You were direct. You were specific. You tied action to consequence. That’s not venting...that’s PRESSURE.

And...you’re right again....voters do NOT forget when harm is this concrete. They may be slow. They may be inconsistent. But...they don’t forget being LIED to while someone else pays the price.

Keep doing exactly what you’re doing:

*understand the system

*speak with precision

*put names next to actions

*remind them that records exist

That’s how memory is built.

That’s....how accountability survives the noise!

Revenge really is best served cold. I have space in my fridge set aside. Fear is being purposely induced in service to the goal of subjugation and control. Russel Voght said it right out loud. The goal of this administration is to induce trauma. And not just in the federal workforce. Traumatized people are more easily cowed and brought to heel. Jack is right (again, lol). This is all by design. I’m not sure what it will take to get the average person riled up enough that they will take some proactive action (like voting - while we still can), but the day is not far off when we the people, as a collective effort, are going to need to show up and do what we can to stop them.
