The president and family are tenants. They don't get to build a new fortress. I worked for a long time in the field of historic preservation, and what happened to the East Wing makes me sick to my stomach. I hope I HOPE the commission reviewing the ballroom debacle listens to the 30,000+ comments and has the backbone to say NOT ON OUR WATCH.
Hopkins is right to treat architecture as evidence. Buildings outlast speeches. They are the physical record of how power understands itself.
The detail that matters most is not the ballroom. It is the demolition. The East Wing is already gone. You demolish first when you have decided the institutions designed to slow you down no longer apply to you.
The timeline tells you what the press conferences don’t. A facility completing six months before a scheduled transition is not being built for the next occupant. Leaders who build for permanence have stopped preparing for a successor.
The donor question matters. Private money funding permanent architecture on public presidential grounds changes the relationship between the symbol and the public. We should know who is paying. We should ask what they expect.
Political capture announces itself in buildings before it announces itself in policy. Hopkins is asking the right question: does the person in the building believe it belongs to them? Ask it now. Before the concrete sets.
The minute he decided to 1) tear down the” East Wing and 2) take the airplane from middle east & have USA pay-taxes to refurbish to make it applicable to “presidential friendly” it was obviously trump had NO intention of leaving! Why would he, if these refurbishments wont be done until he’s gone!
Here's a perdiction for ya Jack; Cheetolini will be removed from our Whitehouse before any of his projects are complete leaving them for the next administration to end in demolishment. This bullshit, criminal administration will not last that long...
Why do guys like Trump and Putin seem to live forever? Why can’t nature just take them out? No, I don’t want him assassinated- he would be come a martyr to MAGA. Trump has never done anything in his life for anyone but himself, so the Whitehouse is definitely where he plans to remain, unless Congress gets their act together and takes him out legally with treason as the reason.
The problem is Trump respects NOTHING…he’s treating the “Presidency” as he’s treated everything in his entire life…it’s just one big grift! I want this grift, this national disgrace and his entire regime canceled very soon!!!
All the more worrisome from a psychological POV when you take into account that he has no boundaries - not between self and others, in time or in space. It is all Ego/Self - and all intended (consciously and/or unconsciously) to represent an immortal, all-powerful Ego/Self; in space, in time, in relationship to others.
A. It’s clear to me, Trump, his family, and billionaire friends, are creating( on the public dime) their shelter from nuclear fallout out. Zuckerberg, spent his own money. Musk probably has a compound on Mars, already. That’s why they don’t care about climate change, and Earths’ destruction. He said it himself- he is not going to leave.
You and your daughter have a good time, Jack. Family times are important snd special!
A is the answer to your question. A couple of thoughts come to mind while I was reading your message. In a government class in high school years, the teacher, in referring to communists, said, “Give them an inch, and they’ll take a mile.” I do not know where that expression originated, but I certainly interested what he meant. Definitely it applies in this situation. The taking and changing of whatever he wants to do in these categories are examples, not that the label in the quotation is being suggested, nor would it be ruled out. He simply takes, whether or not an inch was given.
We knew from campaign talk, which was all over the news, that just as he said, “I promise you, vote for me and you’ll never have to vote again.”, he also said that he would rebuild Washington D. C., and that it would be beautiful. In those ways, and in many more ways, he was telling people what his plans were. Each step of it is sickening to people who truly care about our country, and we have witnessed it taking place each step of the way.
We Americans, as owners of the White House, should have evicted him with the first change not in keeping with a renter’s rights. How could we ever have reached this point?
…… Actually we know that since nobody stood up with him as a unified body of Congress or as a justice department doing their job and agreeing, and without granting unusual powers, which are not a constitutional decision, most of this would not be happening.
I could continue complaints, and as for all of us, the concerns are many and deep. Still, we must be capable of doing our weekend somehow and removing the bad situation. We have the election, which must go through well, each of the steps in having the turnover, and we do still have people holding the offices, even though many of them have broken their oath. Since they are still there, I see no reason why they can’t do the right thing before they got out of office. That all sounds like oversimplification, but I do not know of any other way to think of it. Restoring much, including the White House and other buildings, our agencies, integrity within the jobs, and much more will take a lot of doing.
The demolition of the East wing made my gut turn over and the interior design looked like a bordello. Now we are hearing about another massive underground plan wtf is going on. It will take years to undo the sick SOB sh*t he has already done in Washington. I have never wished the demise of someone ever, but he needs to be gone so that this can stop. Thank you Jack for this info as we will never see it in MSM.
After his death, Germany removed all monuments to Hitler and eraserd his name from any buildings where it appeared. This is exactly what is going to happen when Donald Trump is gone.
Another contributor on this site, says, there are plans for underground living spaces under Maralago—and surveillance equipment for Plantier, true? Some people think they will never die. With AI, maybe they never will. I hope they all get on the golden jet tomorrow, and never come back.
It's not a ballroom, most likely. The scale and the price tag don't make sense according to the architectural plans that were released. He is redoing the bunker that is known to reside underneath it. Some say that the firms involved with the "ballroom" plans actually have expertise in areas that are closer to builders if tech and other more industrial types of architecture. It's even rumored that it could be a massive fully self contained underground data center. Receipts for this speculation are said to exist.
It makes a helluva lot more sense that there's more than meets the eye when we're told about the East Wing destruction in the name of a gilded ballroom. While that would certainly appeal to Trump's vanity and venality, I'm certain it's bigger than that. This whole "underground" visitor's center is just too closely aligned with the idea of a new bunker being fortified to be a mere coincidence. There are no coincidences.

Agree with you & yes, like a male cat, he’s already scented his territory!
The taxpayer is paying. We know that because Republicans blocked language that stated the people would not pay for trump’s folly.
MICROSOFT and other corporations.
Once DT announced it some of them withdrew.
He was going to put up NAMES around the ballroom😡😠

Forgot building the “Ballroom” ?

From your lips to God’s ear…please!

A, but I respect the homes I've rented. I hate this whole thing - that's the People's House, not Trump's! 🤬

A. Also prosecute DT for BULLDOZING the Eastwing. It was ILLEGAL, and NOT an official duty.
Have National historian chime in.😊

It feels like rape to me.
Taking without permission.
Rape is the DJT way.
Excellent summation!
