WHY I’M NOT PANICKING ABOUT NOVEMBER 3rd
A Q&A for people who are scared, exhausted, and nobody’s fool
The Jack Hopkins Now Newsletter #1,027: Friday, September 18th, 2026.
I’m not going to blow sunshine up your pant leg.
You’ve been lied to…by too many people…with too many fundraising links…and you can smell happy talk from a mile away. So let’s do this the honest way. You ask the ugly questions. I answer them straight…including the parts that hurt.
Ready? Let’s go.
Q: The polls said a lot of things in 2016 and 2020. Why should I believe them now?
You shouldn’t. Not entirely.
Polls are a snapshot of a mood…not a prophecy. But…here’s what I watch instead: actual human beings walking into actual voting booths.
Across 39 contested state legislative special elections this year…Democrats have outrun their 2024 presidential baseline by a median of 10.4 points…beating expectations in 34 of 39 races, flipping five Republican-held seats and losing zero. Going back to January 2025, there have been 117 legislative specials. Democrats won 67. Republicans won 29.
Those aren’t opinions. Those are ballots.
The generic ballot right now sits around D+7…with Trump approval near 38% and 74% of the country saying we’re on the wrong track.
Q: Fine. But didn’t Democrats look great early in 2018 too, then fade?
Yes. And I’m glad you asked…because…anybody who won’t tell you this is selling something.
In early 2018, Democratic overperformance in specials ran D+18.1. By the May-through-October stretch…it had cooled to a median of D+2.0.
So…the current number will probably shrink. Bank on it.
But…notice where 2018 landed: a net gain of 308 state legislative seats and six chamber flips. The early signal was inflated. It was also directionally dead-on.
A thermometer that runs a couple degrees hot…still tells you the house is on fire.
Q: They redrew the maps. Texas. Missouri. North Carolina. Ohio. Isn’t the House already stolen?
No. And the numbers say so…clearly.
Cook Political Report’s redistricting tracker projects Republicans net roughly four seats from all the mid-decade map-drawing combined… and Cook still believes Democrats are favored to win the House…because Republicans are clinging to a three-seat majority.
Why so small? Because Californians punched back. Prop 50 passed with 64% of the vote…and was engineered to flip up to five Republican seats…the exact number Texas drew for itself. The Supreme Court declined to block it…leaving those maps in force for this election.
And…understand the dirty secret of aggressive gerrymanders: to manufacture extra seats…you have to spread your own voters thinner. In a normal year…that’s clever. In a wave year…it’s how you drown.
Q: What about Louisiana v. Callais? The Court gutted the Voting Rights Act. Isn’t that the ballgame?
This one I won’t soften…because you’d know I was faking.
On April 29, 2026, a 6-3 Court held Louisiana committed an unconstitutional racial gerrymander by creating a second majority-minority district…and narrowed Section 2 so that it’s violated only where evidence supports a strong inference the state intentionally drew districts to give minority voters less opportunity because of race. Plaintiffs now must show bloc voting isn’t explainable by partisanship…and past discrimination counts for far less.
That is a genuine wound. It will cost real representation in real places…and I’m not going to pretend otherwise…just to make you feel better for ninety seconds.
But…hear me clearly: Callais is a map case…not a counting case. It did not touch your right to cast a ballot. It did not touch who tallies it. It makes the terrain steeper; it does not end the war. State constitutions…state courts…state supreme court elections… and ballot initiatives remain wide open…which is precisely why the other side is pouring money into those races.
The answer to a tilted field isn’t to walk off it. It’s to win by more than the tilt.
Q: Trump tried to seize control of mail voting. Doesn’t he just run the election now?
He tried. He lost. Repeatedly.
A federal judge issued a preliminary injunction blocking the Postal Service rule dictating how mail ballots can be sent…finding it likely unlawful and unconstitutional.
Then the Supreme Court itself rejected the administration’s mail-voting restrictions for this cycle…letting states keep their existing procedures…with Kavanaugh writing that applying the rule in 2026 would be unlawful because officials hadn’t been given time to implement it.
Read that again. That Court. This President. Blocked anyway.
Elections in this country are run by 50 states and thousands of counties. That decentralization is a maddening…glorious…unhackable mess. It is the single most underrated asset we have.
Q: Our own party’s approval numbers are in the basement. How do we win like that?
Because midterms aren’t a popularity contest. They’re a referendum on the people holding the wheel.
Yes…Democratic favorability hit 28%, the lowest in CNN’s polling history. And…in that same survey…72% of Democratic voters said they were extremely motivated to vote: 22 points above Republicans.
Even Fox’s own pollster put it bluntly: a soft party brand is unlikely to translate into GOP midterm success…because Democrats say they’ll almost universally vote their party and independents favor them too.
Nobody shows up on Election Day to award a trophy for likability. They show up… because their grocery bill doubled…their kid’s clinic closed…or masked men grabbed their neighbor.
Anger beats affection. Every single time.
Q: So where does this actually stand?
Decision Desk HQ gives Democrats a 68% chance of taking the House…projecting 230 seats. A New York Times/Siena poll has Democrats up eight. The Senate is harder — Cook lists seven toss-ups, with New Hampshire moving to toss-up in mid-September.
Favored is not finished. Sixty-eight percent means one time in three, we lose.
You don’t coast on 68%. You run through the tape.
Q: What do I do tomorrow?
Three things. Small, boring, decisive.
One: Verify your registration this week, not in October. Two: Make a plan in writing… date, place, ride, ballot deadline…and make one for three other people. Three: Pick ONE close race…and give it something real. Money, phones, doors, a Saturday.
Despair is a choice…and it’s the only one that guarantees the outcome you’re afraid of.
They need you to believe it’s already over. That’s the whole play. Don’t fall for it. DO NOT.
PUT ME ON THE RECORD
I’d rather be wrong…out loud…than vague forever. Screenshot this. On November 4th I’m grading myself in front of all of you…and I’ll publish the misses at the top…not buried.
By November 3, 2026, I’m calling:
Democrats win the House majority.
The final national House popular vote margin lands between D+4 and D+9.
Democrats net at least two Senate seats…I’m not promising four.
At least one race stays uncalled for 72+ hours and triggers a lawsuit…and the certification still holds.
What would change my mind between now and then:
Generic ballot slipping under D+3 for three straight weeks, Trump approval climbing back over 44%, or…Democratic special-election overperformance dropping below D+3 in October.
If those happen, you’ll hear it from me first…not from someone else pointing it out.
That’s the deal I’m offering: I show my math…and…I eat it when it’s wrong.

P.S. The reason they’re gerrymandering mid-decade, rewriting ballot rules, and suing postal carriers isn’t confidence. It’s arithmetic. Nobody rearranges the furniture when they think they’re winning the argument.
P.P.S. Analyst G. Elliott Morris argues the race raters are lowballing Democrats: pooling Cook, Inside Elections and Sabato using how their labels have historically performed moves the House from a coin flip to roughly 228 seats and an 83% chance. The experts may be wrong again…and this time…in our favor. Either way: register, plan, vote.
P.P.P.S. Between now and November 3rd I’m publishing THE TUESDAY TALLY every week for paid subscribers: the specials that came in, what moved, what I got wrong, and the two or three races where a hundred bucks or a Saturday actually moves a needle. No panic, no doom-scrolling, no fundraising theater. Just the scoreboard and the receipts.
If this piece was worth your time, that’s what your subscription buys, and it’s what keeps me able to spend nine hours chasing down a footnote instead of writing whatever’s trending.
Not able to swing it? Forward this to one person who’s given up. That helps me just as much.

As Jack reminds us ALL....
The Midterms ARE a referendum on the People holding the Wheel NOW!!
SAVE AMERICA and DEMOCRACY!!
VOTE 'EM ALL OUT!!
THEN LOCK 'EM ALL UP!!
Thanks for this. I worked the polls for the first time during our primary. It was good to feel part of the process, so I'd add that to your list of things to do/consider: work the polls, volunteer for a candidate outside the polling place. Be part of the experience. #holdingfast
