Who’s Really Pulling the Trigger on Iran?
It isn’t the man you think it is.
Who’s Really Pulling the Trigger on Iran?
It isn’t the man you think it is.
The Jack Hopkins Now Newsletter # 834: Sunday, March 29th, 2026
There’s a question nobody in mainstream media is asking directly.
Not because they don’t see it.
Because saying it out loud requires a level of clarity most outlets have decided they can’t afford.
So I’ll say it.
Donald Trump is not the primary architect of American policy toward Iran.
Someone else is.
Several someones, actually.
And…understanding who they are… and how they operate…is the most important thing you can know about how we got here…and where this is going next.
The Signal: Watch the Behavior, Not the Rhetoric
Forget what Trump says about Iran.
Watch what he does.
Because the pattern of his behavior on Iran doesn’t look like a man with a strategy.
It looks like a man responding to inputs.
In June 2019, Trump approved an airstrike on Iran.
Then called it off.
With ten minutes to spare.
His explanation? He hadn’t known how many people would die until someone told him at the last moment.
Think about that.
The President of the United States approved a military strike on a sovereign nation…and didn’t know the casualty estimate until he was ten minutes from the point of no return.
That is not strategic decision-making.
That is a man being moved through a process by people who understand the process better than he does.
He withdrew from the Iran nuclear deal…the JCPOA…over the objections of his own Defense Secretary, James Mattis. Over the objections of career intelligence officials. Over the objections of America’s closest European allies.
He ordered the assassination of Qasem Soleimani…one of the most consequential and dangerous military actions of the last two decades…and then appeared genuinely surprised by the international reaction that followed.
These are not the decisions of a man with a coherent strategic vision on Iran.
They are the decisions of a man who is being handed a vision…
…and told it’s his own.
The Doctrine: Three Power Centers, One Direction
Here’s what the record shows.
Three overlapping power centers have had sustained…documented influence over Trump’s Iran policy across both terms. And…all three push in exactly the same direction.
Power Center One: The Pompeo Channel
Mike Pompeo has spoken openly…openly… about his belief that events in the Middle East…carry theological significance. About the rapture. About biblical prophecy playing out in real time through geopolitical conflict.
That is not hyperbole. That is his stated worldview.
And…Pompeo maintained extraordinary access to Trump throughout both terms. When Pompeo wanted the Soleimani strike…he got it. When career intelligence officials counseled a different course…they were sidelined.
Here’s the tell: the theological framework Pompeo brings to Iran policy is not Trump’s framework. Trump has no consistent theological framework on Iran. No doctrine. No north star.
He adopted Pompeo’s.
That’s not leadership. That’s a transmission mechanism.
Power Center Two: The Netanyahu Channel
The documented record of Benjamin Netanyahu’s influence on Trump’s Iran decisions is not a matter of speculation.
It is a matter of record.
Trump withdrew from the JCPOA within weeks of a Netanyahu presentation… complete with visual aids…blown-up documents…dramatic staging…about Iranian nuclear activity.
Israeli intelligence has been the primary sourcing for several of the most consequential threat assessments that preceded American escalations against Iran.
Netanyahu comes to every interaction with Trump carrying three things: a specific ask, specific intelligence to justify the ask, and a relational dynamic carefully calibrated to make Trump feel like the strong man who finally has the courage to act where others have failed.
That is not diplomacy.
That is a targeted influence operation directed at a specific decision-maker’s specific psychological vulnerabilities.
And it has worked. Repeatedly. Consistently. Predictably.
Israel has a sovereign interest in degrading Iranian military and nuclear capability. That interest is real and in many ways legitimate.
But it is not identical to American interest.
The distinction between what is good for Israel…and what is good for the United States on Iran has been deliberately and systematically collapsed…and Trump either cannot see the difference or does not care to look for it.
Power Center Three: The Neoconservative Infrastructure
John Bolton served as National Security Advisor during the most dangerous period of Iran escalation in Trump’s first term.
Bolton has advocated for regime change in Iran for decades.
In 2015…five years before he walked into the Trump White House…Bolton wrote an op-ed in the New York Times titled “To Stop Iran’s Bomb, Bomb Iran.”
That was his position before Trump. It was his position inside the Trump administration. It will be his position after Trump.
Trump did not give Bolton that position.
Bolton brought it with him.
The broader neoconservative policy infrastructure…the Foundation for Defense of Democracies…the American Enterprise Institute…the network of think tanks that have spent two decades building the intellectual architecture for confrontation with Iran…feeds policy frameworks directly into Republican administrations.
Trump did not arrive at a confrontational Iran posture independently.
He was handed one. Repeatedly. By people who had been building it for twenty years …and knew exactly how to package it for him.
The Pattern: How You Move a Man Like Trump
People who worked directly with Trump…Mattis…Tillerson…Kelly…Bolton…have documented his decision-making psychology with remarkable consistency.
He responds to the last strong voice in the room.
He responds to visual presentations over written analysis.
He responds to personal flattery from foreign leaders.
He responds to framings that allow him to look strong…decisive…and historically significant.
He responds to the suggestion…that he is the one leader…with the courage…to do what others have been too weak to attempt.
This is not a profile that resists manipulation.
This is a profile that invites it.
And…the people surrounding him on Iran…Netanyahu, Pompeo, the neoconservative advisors who rotate in and out of his orbit…understand this profile intimately.
They know how to walk into a room…and within twenty minutes…have Donald Trump believing that bombing Iran was his idea all along.
That is the mechanism.
That…is the machine.
