Let me explain what leverage is…because two United States senators appear to have forgotten.

Leverage is what you have when the other guy needs something from you…and you don’t need anything from him.

That’s it. That’s the whole concept. Every negotiation in the history of commerce runs on it.

Now look at the hand John Cornyn and Thom Tillis were holding last Thursday.

Twelve to ten on the committee. One seat of margin. Either man votes no and the nomination dies right there on the table.

And…here’s the part that should have made this the easiest play in American politics: neither one of them is coming back.Cornyn lost his primary to a Trump-backed challenger. Tillis is walking. Both are gone in January.

No donors to appease. No primary to survive. No future to protect. Two men holding a veto, standing at the end of their careers, with absolutely nothing left to lose.

That is the strongest position anyone in Washington has occupied in a year.

They traded it for a piece of paper. Overnight.

Read the sequence and tell me I’m wrong. Thursday:

Grassley cancels the vote because they won’t budge.

Cornyn tells reporters the Justice Department “stonewalled” him, that they “simply refused to cooperate.”

Saturday: Trump goes to Truth Social and threatens them; keep Blanche as acting AG, push the payout fund through anyway…and by the way…you two lost and quit.

Saturday afternoon…Tillis fires back that Trump “clearly intends to resurrect the payout pot for punks.”

Sunday night…Blanche posts two documents.

Monday morning, they issue a joint statement saying they look forward to advancing his nomination.

Roughly thirty-six hours from “they refused to cooperate” to “we look forward to voting yes.” That’s not a negotiation. That’s a man…deciding how long to make you stand there before he hands you the exit.

And what did they actually buy with the only leverage they’ll ever have again?

They killed the fund. Give them that…the $1.776 billion payout pot is formally rescinded, and reviving it just got politically harder. Real. Worth something.

Now here’s the part nobody’s putting in the headline.

The other document doesn’t kill Trump’s IRS settlement. It clarifies it. Says it applies to past tax issues, applies to the named parties in the lawsuit…meaning the president.

The audit protection survives. The financial upside to Trump personally survives. It’s still exposed to court challenges…sure…but Cornyn and Tillis just voted to advance the man who signed it…having secured a document that mostly explains what it always meant.

They objected to two things. They got one. And the one they got…was the one with the ugly name attached…not the one with the money attached.

You know what that is? That’s the oldest close in the book. Give the buyer the concession that costs you least…wrap it in ceremony…and let him walk out feeling like a winner while you keep the item you actually cared about.

They fell for it. In public. In thirty-six hours.

Cornyn and Blanche walked through this exact issue at the July 15 hearing. Cornyn knew what was in the settlement.

He raised it himself…repeatedly…on camera. He understood the structure. And then he accepted a clarification…of the thing he’d spent three weeks calling unacceptable.

So…don’t let anyone sell you the redemption arc. Don’t let anyone tell you the institution held. The institution didn’t hold.

Two men with immunity from every consequence Washington can manufacture; no primary…no donors…no next term… stood at the one moment when a no was free…and blinked.

If the men who have nothing left to lose still fold…then the price was never the career. The career was just the excuse.
