THEY BANNED THREE NEWSROOMS. THAT’S NOT THE SCARY PART.
The Jack Hopkins Now Newsletter #1,028: Saturday, September 19th, 2026
–45 days out from the midterms.
Let me be blunt with you…because it’s Saturday night and neither of us has the patience for a warm-up act.
This morning a CNN reporter named Betsy Klein walked up to the White House gate, scanned her badge, and had her credential confiscated. She filed her report from the sidewalk holding an empty badge holder.
Politico’s Cheyenne Haslett got the same treatment. So did MS NOW’s Akayla Gardner and her photographer…though in a detail that tells you everything about how carefully this was thought through, an MS NOW producer scanned her badge a few minutes later and walked right in.
Trump announced the ban Friday out of nowhere. He didn’t cite a story. He didn’t cite a correction. He griped about fake news in general and added a promise: other outlets were to follow. CNN called it an illegal assault on a constitutional right. All three outlets say they’re lawyering up.
Now…here’s where I lose about a third of you.
That is not the most dangerous thing that happened today.
It is the loudest thing. It is the thing your entire timeline is about right now. It is not the most dangerous thing. And…if you spend this weekend appropriately furious about it and never get to the second story…you will have done precisely what you were supposed to do.
THE STORY THAT RAN AT 7:51 THIS MORNING AND VANISHED
The Associated Press published it before most of you were awake. No cable panel. No trending tag.
Several of the largest left-leaning voter engagement and racial justice organizations in the country….are facing steep funding shortfalls and staff cuts…right as voting begins in the election that decides control of Congress.
America Votes…the coordinating hub for more than 400 progressive groups…the nerve center for mobilization by the NAACP, Planned Parenthood, the AFL-CIO, SEIU and the League of Conservation Voters… is running well below what it had in 2022.
Its executive director’s framing is worth sitting with: the window to reach these voters isn’t a future opportunity. It’s open right now and closing by the day.
Why? Wealthy donors and philanthropic foundations have pulled back from liberal causes since 2024, and the retreat has been sharpest for groups that turn out voters of color.
One Democratic operative gave AP the three-word autopsy: “Surrender, not strategy.”
Read what these groups are doing to cope…because it’s the whole story in miniature. They’re leaning on AI to generate voter registration guides. They’re swapping bus shuttles for rideshare partnerships. They’re replacing in-person organizers with social media and liberal content creators.
Those are not upgrades. Those are the things you do when you can’t afford people.
NOW PUT THE THIRD THING NEXT TO IT
While the field operation was shrinking, the money arrived on the other side.
In the last two weeks, MAGA Inc. and two new Trump-aligned outfits…No Going Back PAC and Safety and Affordability PAC…reserved more than $150 million in ads.
Across the nine most competitive Senate races…Republican candidates and groups have now pledged over $557 million against Democrats’ $343 million…outpacing Democratic reservations in every one of those contests but Georgia. A Republican strategist’s summary: the cavalry has come.
And…look where it’s going…because this part is good news hiding inside bad news. Much of it is defensive…Texas’s 15th…which Trump carried by nearly 18 points. Kentucky’s 6th, by 15. Alabama’s 2nd, by 14.
You do not spend $150 million defending a district you won by 18…unless something has gone badly wrong under the floorboards.
Trump also told reporters…he’s got close to a billion in the super PAC and plans to spend four or five hundred million of it.
I’d hold that number loosely…MAGA Inc.’s actual January FEC filing showed $294 million cash on hand…and this is a man who has been known to round up. But…even the verified figure is enormous.
THE MATH NOBODY WANTS TO DO ON A SATURDAY
Three separate stories. One structure. Shrink who’s allowed to ask questions.
Flood the airwaves with paid messaging. And starve the organizations whose entire job is making sure infrequent voters actually vote.
Two of those three are being done to us. The third one…we did to ourselves.
Nobody banned America Votes. No court gutted it. No executive order touched it. A group of wealthy people who spent 2024 telling you democracy was on the line decided in 2025 that they were tired…or bored… or “interested in different strategies,” and they closed the checkbook.
I want you to be angry about the press passes. I DO. Be ANGRIER about this. The press ban will be litigated…three well-funded news organizations with First Amendment lawyers are already on it…and the experts say it’s unconstitutional. Nobody is litigating a canceled canvass.
And…here’s the practical reason it matters more…which has nothing to do with feelings… and everything to do with arithmetic:
Ads change minds. Doors change turnout. In a midterm, turnout is the whole ballgame.
Persuasion advertising is expensive…saturating…and aimed at a small pool of genuinely undecided people. Midterms aren’t decided by that pool.
They’re decided by the several million people who agree with you completely…and don’t vote; the ones a canvasser reaches…the ones who need a ride…the ones who need somebody to tell them their polling place moved.
You cannot outspend $557 million. You were never going to. But…the field gap is measured in the low tens of millions…and in human hours…and that is the one variable in this entire picture that ordinary people can still move in 45 days.
That’s not a pep talk. That’s just where the leverage is.
SO DO THIS
Give to field, not to ads.
When a fundraising email promises to “put this ad on the air in a key district,” you are being asked to fund the thing we’re going to lose anyway. Fund the groups knocking doors. Movement Voter Project routes money directly to local organizations…that’s the pipe that’s running dry.
Give locally and give now.
Money that arrives in late October buys ads. Money that arrives this week hires an organizer for five weeks.
Then give time, because it’s the thing money can’t replace.
They’re substituting AI chatbots for human canvassers. An AI cannot drive your neighbor to the polls. You can.
And…pick one race.
Not twelve. One. Look at where that defensive money is going…the districts they’re panicking about are the districts where you matter most.
They banned three newsrooms today, and they promised more are coming.
Here’s what they can’t do. They cannot ban ten thousand independent writers funded directly by readers. They cannot confiscate a badge that was never issued by the government in the first place.
And…they cannot…under any executive order ever drafted…ban a woman with a Honda… from driving four neighbors to an early voting site on a Tuesday afternoon.
That’s the vulnerability in their plan. It’s been sitting there the entire time.
Forty-five days.

Back soon.

P.S. If you only remember one line from tonight: the loudest story is almost never the most important one. That’s not a coincidence…and…it’s not an accident. It’s a design feature. Act accordingly.

Another eye opener. Time to sign up to canvas for my candidate running against our House Trumpstein lackey! Thanks Jack!
I need to figure out where to donate. I get almost 200 hundred text messages for donations and nearly 600 emails.. that’s daily. I don’t think any of them meet this need. Who do I call? How do I figure out what organization to donate to? I live in a small mountain town in Western North Carolina and this state is so important.
With my medical conditions, canvassing is probably more than I can handle but I need to help.
I welcome suggestions from anyone who knows how I can do the most good.
Thank you, Jack. I would’ve missed this.
