Thanks for expressing the importance of making that choice each day and closing the book on evaluation.

Thank you for this beautiful and clarifying piece. It's amazing. Somehow coming at this time it makes me stop and step off the treadmill of doom 'out there', take stock of relationships, profession, life focus, and more, and pause to consider them all. It's so easy to get swept up into national and world events, to want better, and lose sight of our own personal reality!

I agree 100%. Stan and I are chalk and cheese and everyone told us it would never last.

47 years later here we are, and even though he doesn't recognise me anymore with his Alzheimers, we chose each other then and we choose each other now. We still gain peace and comfort from each other every day.

P.S. I found the line easily. You’re lucky to have that kind of marriage.

Thank you for this reminder Jack. My husband and I chose each other 50 years ago. I would choose him again today. It’s not always been easy but it’s always been worth every milestone we have taken together.

Tomorrow will be the seventh commemoration of my husband's passing, a few weeks before his 87th birthday. He joined the stars on his favorite day of the year - summer solstice, the longest blue hour, his happiest time. After a life initially shrouded in fatalism, in professions that did not augur a calm transition, it gave me comfort. His wake was From Here to Eternity [ he was the extra in the movie that Burt Lancaster plowed into at the strafing of Schofield Barracks.] We Chose and were/are richer for it, blessed with Our perfection. Thank you Jack, for focusing on what has staying power.

A lifetime partner. A best friend on the most intimate level. As a widow, memories that sustain me every day. Jack, you and your wife have created a beautiful bond.

Beautiful piece Jack! This week coming up my husband and I will be celebrating our 38th anniversary together. I chose him back then and I would choose him again. The memories we have shared both good and bad makes me smile every day! I feel blessed and grateful to have him in my life during these crazy times.

I forgot to say something in my earlier comment.

I'm not convinced it's 'better' that people might evaluate their partner against. It might just be 'different ' - which could be equally or even more dangerous.
