The Perimeter: How to Stay Informed Without Getting Flooded
BEDROCK–Wednesday. The standalone cornerstone. Free for everyone –read it, use it, and pass it to someone who’s drowning in it.
The Jack Hopkins Now Newsletter, Bedrock Series #05: Wednesday, 29th, 2026
On Monday I showed you where the machine gets in: your attention…delivered through the device in your pocket…engineered to keep you agitated so you keep scrolling.
Today I hand you the fix.
And…let me kill the wrong answer first…because you’re expecting it: this is not “delete your apps and go off the grid.” Going blind isn’t strength; it’s just numbness with better PR…and it’s exactly what they’d love you to do. A disengaged citizen is a defeated one.
No. What you need isn’t a wall. It’s a Perimeter…a controlled border where the news gets in on your terms…not the machine’s. You stay informed. You just stop letting the firehose run 24 hours a day straight into your chest.
Three parts. Build all three.
One: set the windows–when it gets in
Right now, the news reaches you constantly…the second you wake…the last thing before sleep…every idle moment in between. That’s the machine’s schedule. We’re replacing it with yours.
Pick your windows. Maybe once around midday…once in the early evening. Twenty minutes each. That’s when you catch up…deliberately…on purpose…sitting down like an adult choosing to be informed.
Outside those windows? The gate is closed.
And here’s the single most important rule in this whole piece…the one that changes everything if you do nothing else:
Protect the first thirty minutes and the last thirty minutes of your day.
No feed first thing. No feed last thing. Do not let the machine be the first voice in your head before you’ve had one thought of your own…and do not let it be the last thing your mind chews on as you try to sleep.
Those two windows set the tone for your entire day and the quality of your entire night. Guard them like they’re sacred. Because they are.
Two: choose your sources–where it comes from
Left to its own devices…the algorithm feeds you whatever spikes your pulse…rage-bait…doom…the most inflammatory version of everything…regardless of whether it’s true or whether it matters.
So take that decision away from it.
Choose…on purpose…in advance…a small handful of sources you actually trust. A few solid outlets. A few writers who inform you instead of just inflaming you. Go to them…directly…during your windows. Let them be your news…instead of whatever the outrage machine shoves in front of you next.
A few trusted sources…chosen by you…beat an infinite feed chosen by a machine that profits from your anxiety. Every time.
Three: the “and then what?” filter–how much you carry
This is where the Perimeter connects to what we built last week.
Remember the cut? Pile one…what you can actually touch today. Pile two…everything else…real but not yours to carry right now. The Perimeter is how you keep pile two from climbing back over the wall.
So before you let a story move in…and take up residence in your body…run it through one question:
“And then what?”
Is there something I will actually do with this? Someone to call…a dollar to give…a vote to plan…an action to take? Or…is it something I genuinely, truly need to know?
If yes…let it in. Act on it. That’s pile one. That’s fuel.
If it’s just one more thing to feel sick about…with nowhere for the feeling to go…that’s pile two. Note it. Let it pass. You are allowed to not absorb a catastrophe you can do nothing about at 9pm on a Tuesday.
Staying informed does not require you to personally marinate in every wound in the world. It requires you to know…what’s true…and act where you can. The filter is how you tell the difference.
Put it to work today
Three moves. That’s the Perimeter.
Windows: decide when the news gets in…and guard your first and last thirty minutes.
Sources: pick a few you trust…and go to them instead of the firehose.
Filter: “and then what?” …let in what you can act on, let the rest pass.
Set your windows today. Pick your sources tonight. Run the filter the very next time you feel that pull to scroll.
Do it for one week…and I promise you’ll notice two things: you’ll know more about what actually matters…and you’ll carry far less of what doesn’t.
That’s not disengagement. That’s a soldier…who stops standing in the open…and finally takes cover…so they can last long enough to actually fight.
I’ll see you Friday…and we’ll close the week strong.

Bedrock: what holds when everything shakes. If this helped, send it to someone who can’t put the phone down. That’s how we keep each other standing.
P.S. Bedrock runs Monday, Wednesday and Friday. Wednesday goes to everyone…all three days go to paid subscribers, along with every other paid article. Upgrade today and you won't miss any of it.

Great breakdown Jack. I plan to review who I allow in a second time. It sort of like cleaning out the house of things you do not need anymore.
