Noem leaving early as she did was a complete Big FU to every Democrat on that committee: it showed her contempt of our Democracy & rule of law and total disregard of the 3 branches of government . This Administration is mired in the belief that they are ALL untouchable.. maybe untouchable for now but not in the Long run

Jack Hopkins's avatar

Lillian...you’re exactly right...walking out early wasn’t a scheduling issue. It was a gesture... a deliberate show of contempt...dressed up as nonchalance. Noem knew EXACTLY what she was signaling:

“I don’t recognize your authority, I don’t respect this oversight, and I don’t consider myself bound by the same rules everyone else has to follow.”

That’s not attitude.

That’s ANTI-DEMOCRATIC posture.

Leaving mid-testimony is the political equivalent of kicking over the microphone on the way out...a Big FU...as you put it...to the entire structure of checks and balances.

And...she did it...because this administration has fully internalized one belief:

Accountability is optional...if you perform enough swagger.

But here’s the part they always forget:

Untouchable isn’t a status.

It’s a phase.

Every authoritarian leaning figure in history...has had a moment where they genuinely believed the rules no longer applied to them. And...every one of them...eventually learned the same lesson:

Institutions may bend.

They may get battered.

They may even go quiet for a while.

But...they don’t forget. They do not.

And...they don’t stay broken forever.

Noem walked out...because she thinks the moment is on her side.

But moments shift.

Winds turn.

And contempt...always leaves a paper trail.

The long run has a way of catching up.

Here’s my four words: what a fucking bitch. The guardrails don’t apply to me either kristi.

Jack Hopkins's avatar

Tom...that says it in a way that resonates with me...right down to the tips of my toes!

-Jack

Tom Schell's avatar

How about we indict kristi here in NJ for multiple state criminal acts? I’ll find a way to get on the jury: I’ll either be the lone holdout on a not guilty verdict or I’ll convince every other juror to convict. That would be fun.

Another thing I like about Substack: you can words you use every day w/o getting censored.

Exactly. One nasty piece of work.

It turns out she lied about why she was leaving. There was no FEMA meeting. Jared Moskowitz called her out too. The FEMA meeting was cancelled. So I have a bug middle finger for her over make-uped face and her plastic surgery lips.

Jack Hopkins's avatar

Exactly, Laura...and that detail matters more than people realize.

When a public official lies about why they’re leaving a hearing...especially one where they’re already stonewalling...and dodging basic oversight...it tells you the departure wasn’t about scheduling at all. It was about control.

Noem didn’t walk out because she had somewhere important to be.

She walked out...because she had nowhere else to hide.

And being caught in the lie by Moskowitz...just underscores the point: the performance wasn’t strength...it was cowardice...wrapped in cosmetics...a manufactured exit...meant to create the illusion of being “too important” for accountability.

This is the same playbook used by Bondi...Patel...and the rest of the authoritarian chorus:

When the questions get too close to the truth...they manufacture a crisis elsewhere... and flee the room.

It’s not confidence.

It’s not dominance.

It’s fear...trying to look glamorous.

And the bigger the lie...the bigger the middle finger they’re giving to everyone who still believes public officials...owe the truth to the people they serve.

You’re seeing it, Laura... exactly for what it is.

They learned this from drumpf...How many fires has he created in a year to avoid all the major issues like Epstein...russia...Ukraine...set fires everywhere else to take it away from the stuff you don't want to talk about like criminal activity

Kelly Rundel's avatar

Is what I’d like them to say to her… (hit post too early 🙄

Kelly Rundel's avatar

Nice try, now let’s hear the truth!

Sheila's avatar

Jack - Didn’t Bondi and Patel already set this standard and Noem is following in kind? All three were in contempt during recent Congressional hearings with no repercussions.

Jack Hopkins's avatar

Sheila...exactly. Bondi and Patel DID set the template...and Noem is simply operating inside the permission structure they created.

Once Congress let those two dodge questions...sneer at subpoenas...and show open contempt...without any consequences... the message to every Trump-aligned official was obvious:

“Oversight is optional. Defiance is safe.”

Bondi made it loud.

Patel made it strategic.

Noem is making it normal.

And...that’s the real threat: every unanswered act of contempt...doesn’t just embolden the next witness...it weakens Congress itself. When lawmakers refuse to enforce their authority...they teach future witnesses that there’s no price for stonewalling...lying...or walking out.

Bondi and Patel weren’t outliers. They were the test runs.

Noem...is the pattern.

But maybe the best part was when the CC spelled her name “Gnome”.

Jack Hopkins's avatar

LOL...I can't disagree with that, Randy.

Randy S. Eisenberg's avatar

And not as if I use her name a lot, it’s like summoning Betelgeuse- but that’s how it’s spelled from now on.

“Motherless whore” came to mind immediately, although I was disappointed that it was the best I could do. I spent my early years working for mechanics and tradesmen who were likely born in the late 19th century, I am old enough and fortunate enough (or cursed) to carry a vocabulary of profanity, “jokes” and epithets that were already old and often unacceptable in 1940. “Polite society”. (Anyone remember what that used to be? Didn't think so.)

Now most all would be unacceptable in *any* conversation. And racist beyond repeating anywhere. Even names of stuff- (Jack, you probably recall what sailors used to call those massive, turban shaped dock bollards) In a way I appreciate this early education, and I’m left with half a head full of stuff I can’t use. Explains a lot, and has come in handy. But I digress, it’s my MO after all.

Jack Hopkins's avatar

You’re speaking a forgotten language, Randy...the old dialect of working men who knew how to weld steel...pull engines...splice rope...and curse with the kind of creativity you don’t hear anymore.

And honestly? There’s something refreshing...at least for me...about someone who still remembers when profanity had layers...and not just volume.

But here’s the thing: the INSTINCT behind the epithet is what matters...not the word itself.

You saw the contempt in Noem’s behavior...the brazen lie...the fake emergency exit...the calculated smirk ...and your mind reached for the sharpest tool you learned back when the world still had rules...and people still had consequences.

What you’re reacting to isn’t just her.

It’s the collapse of “polite society” as you put it...the disappearance of a time when even the roughest men in the dirtiest trades...still understood that when you were called to account...you stood there and answered like an adult.

Now?

We get plastic patriot cosplay...fake excuses...and a level of shamelessness...that your 19th-century mechanics would’ve likely have slapped out of an apprentice with...with the back of their hand.

So...don’t apologize for the vocabulary you carry. I don't.

It’s a relic of a world...where...accountability meant something...language had bite...and people didn’t run from questions behind a lie...about a meeting that didn’t exist.

You’re not the problem.

The culture...that made her behavior possible is.

And you see it....with perfect clarity.

-Jack

When someone like Noem is deporting veterans of this country...believe me...monitoring my language isn't even on my radar...and if it came on during that time...I'd quickly swat it away.

Thanks Jack. My mind zipped back and forth between disgust and rage, with a shot of disbelief, at her antics, and those who let her go unchecked, those supposedly in charge of the committee turned circus of the absurd. Her most bile inducing behavior was in her "thanking" those for their service while laughing inside like a Jackal at the request that she review the decisions of those whose future she had already set in stone.

My response was a silent scream, Why was she not under oath? Why are any of these clowns allowed to lie with impunity? Without censure? Without impeachment? Yes, I will call my "representatives" which here in Utah might be like whistling in the wind. But enough whistlers can make a difference.

She shot her puppy. That alone should have discredited her from doing anything in the government. She is a vile, disgusting individual. If there is any justice left in the world, she'll get what she deserves.

Cosplay Kristi HairExtensions Noem is a weakling trying to dress up as something and someone she is not. She is unknowledgeable in so many aspects. She is cruel and inhumane. She wears those like badges of honor. She didn't lose her temper, she had no answers. She is like a pre-programmed stepford wife who can only answer what has been put into her input slot. Thanks for the truth!

Jack's stonewalling comment is right on the money. It precisely matches my definition of a Trumpian response I outline on my Substack, "A View from the Cheap Seats". This method Jack so eloquently describes is not just used by Trump's Administration, but by his rabid supporters.
