The Musk Money Machine
$366 Million. Three Weeks Left. And He’s Not Done.
The Jack Hopkins Now Newsletter #1,055: Tuesday, October 13th, 2026.
Let’s skip the polite warm-up.
Elon Musk has now put roughly $366 million into the 2026 midterm elections. Not one of the biggest donors. The biggest. And here is the part that should stop you cold:
$276 million of that landed since July, in the third quarter alone, according to a New York Times analysis of federal filings that his own super PAC confirmed on Monday.
Remember what he said in May of last year? After the chainsaw. After DOGE. After the ugly…public breakup with Donald Trump…the threat to start a third party and primary every Republican who voted for the spending bill “if it is the last thing I do on this Earth.”
He said he planned to do “a lot less” political spending in future elections, including these midterms.
Write that promise down. Then throw it in the trash, because that is exactly where he put it.
In 2024 Musk spent about $290 million electing Trump…the most any individual had ever put into a single American election. He has already beaten that record. With three weeks to go.
And the $366 million is only what he was required to disclose. A source told the Times he has also made seven-figure donations through groups that never have to reveal where their money comes from.
That’s not a man who got out of politics. That’s a man who took a sabbatical, read the room, and came back with a bigger checkbook than anyone in American history.
Where $276 Million Goes in One Quarter
Most people hear “political donation” and picture TV ads. Forget TV ads. Look at the actual line items.
$158 million to the Senate Leadership Fund, the super PAC that exists to keep Republicans in control of the Senate.
$76 million to America PAC, his own operation.
$20 million to the Congressional Leadership Fund, the House equivalent.
$10 million to Lone Star Liberty PAC, which backs Ken Paxton’s Senate run in Texas. That one check is nearly the PAC’s entire budget for the cycle.
And earlier, $10 million to a super PAC supporting Nate Morris in the Kentucky Republican primary to replace Mitch McConnell.
Once you lay it out, the strategy is obvious. The money does three things.
Number one: it clears the field before you ever get a vote.
The Kentucky money didn’t go to a general election. It went to a primary. The point was to make sure the Republican nominee for an open Senate seat…was somebody Musk picked…before a single Democrat was on the ballot.
One check, one race, one man deciding who the rest of the state gets to choose between.
Number two: it buys turnout, which is the only thing that matters in a midterm.
America PAC isn’t an ad shop. It’s a door-knocking, data-mining, get-out-the-vote operation. It has already dropped $16.6 million into Senate races in Ohio, Michigan, Iowa and Maine, and the Times described the whole $276 million push as a turnout machine built to help Republicans fight headwinds.
Midterms are won by the side that drags more of its own voters to the polls. Musk just bought the biggest pair of boots in the country.
Number three: it buys something no disclosure form will ever show you.
Access. Gratitude. A phone that gets answered. Musk runs companies that live and die on federal contracts, federal regulators and federal launch licenses.
Last year’s feud with Trump reportedly flared…in part…because the White House pulled the NASA nomination of his close ally Jared Isaacman. The richest man on earth…got angry with a president…over who would run the agency that writes his rocket company’s checks.
Now the fight is over. Trump has gone back to calling him great. And this month, reports say Musk has returned to work with the administration…co-leading a Pentagon study on the future of warfare. Read that again.
The largest donor in the country is back inside the building that buys the weapons. Nobody has to say “quid pro quo” out loud. They just have to understand each other. They do.
Now zoom out, because Musk isn’t the whole story. He’s the headline on a much bigger invoice.
By one count, 172 billionaire families have poured a record $1.7 billion into this election.
Republican-aligned groups have raised more than $1.1 billion compared with about $600 million for Democrats.
No Democratic billionaire is spending anywhere near what Musk is, and party strategists admit money is their central worry in a year where the political environment otherwise favors them.
The Times put it plainly: Musk’s spending has handed Republicans a financial advantage at the exact moment Democrats’ chances of retaking the House and Senate were improving.
A few hundred families. Nearly two billion dollars. One election.
If you are reading this in a swing district…here is the math nobody at the rally will give you. In a single quarter…one man gave more than every small donor in your state will give in the entire cycle…combined.
Your $25 is real. His $276 million is louder. And…the candidate who wins…knows exactly which of you made the difference.
What You Do About It
I’m not going to tell you to be outraged. Outrage is cheap, and it’s what the consultants on both sides are selling.
Here’s what I will tell you.
Campaign finance is not a spectator sport, and the people writing nine-figure checks are counting on you to treat it like one.
They want you to see “$366 million” and shrug. They want the number to feel like weather, something that happens to you rather than something somebody chose.
It was chosen. It can be un-chosen.
Three things…and then I’ll let you go.
First, know who paid for your ballot.
America PAC’s third-quarter report is due to the FEC on October 15. Pull it. Then look up the super PACs spending in your House and Senate races.
It takes ten minutes.
If one man’s name sits behind the ad that’s been on your TV every night, you deserve to know that before you vote, not after.
Second, ask the candidate.
Not the party. The candidate. “Will you support disclosure of every dollar spent to elect you, including the dark-money groups?” Watch what they do with their face. That’s your answer.
Third, stop apologizing for your small check.
Musk isn’t spending $276 million in one quarter because the outcome is certain. He’s spending it because it isn’t. The Times called it a rescue mission. You don’t launch a rescue mission…for a side that’s winning.
The richest man on earth has decided your election is worth $366 million and counting. The only question left is whether you’ll let him have it at that price.

Back soon.

P.S. He said “a lot less.” Then he spent more than he did in 2024…with three weeks still on the clock. When a man tells you what he’s going to do with his money…believe the money, not the man.

It's time to show Musk and the other corrupt oligarchs that there is a limit to what they can buy with their money. VOTE THEIR PREFERRED CANDIDATES OUT! And then push hard for legal changes that will make it impossible for any one individual to ever accumulate so much wealth again!
Thank you Jack! I have always done small donations to as many campaigns as possible researching the best bang for my limited funds. I refuse to let garbage billionaires take Democracy away!! I will also continue to hammer at my do-nothing Senators & Representative with every god-awful issue this regime has done. I know that it doesn't resonate in western North Dakota to be decent representatives however it gives me great joy to have at them continually. Pity that I can't call them the appropriate names they deserve but I certainly can while I am writing to them. #HOLDFAST
