The Death of Restraint: Why the Democratic Party’s Timid Fight Against MAGA May Doom Democracy
The Jack Hopkins Now Newsletter #339
There’s a tragic irony at the heart of American politics right now.
One party is actively plotting to dismantle democracy. The other is too polite to stop them.
While Donald Trump…the MAGA movement…and the architects of Project 2025 are openly laying the groundwork for authoritarianism…the Democratic Party continues to fight as if the stakes are merely policy differences—not the future of the republic itself.
The failure to meet this threat with the urgency and aggression it demands is not just a tactical blunder. It’s a moral failure. And it may cost us everything.
This isn’t just about ineffective messaging or political missteps. It’s about a refusal to accept the new rules of engagement—rules that the other side has already rewritten.
Until Democratic voters…leaders…and institutions face that fact head-on…the imbalance will persist—and democracy will continue to erode.
Let’s break this down.
1. Project 2025: The Blueprint for Authoritarian Rule
Project 2025 isn’t a fringe conspiracy. It’s a real…coordinated plan crafted by some of the most powerful think tanks and political operatives in the conservative movement—backed by Trump allies and the Heritage Foundation.
Its goals are explicitly laid out:
Purge the federal bureaucracy of non-loyalists.
Eliminate the independence of the Department of Justice and other critical agencies.
Dismantle environmental…labor…and civil rights protections.
Expand presidential power to near-monarchical levels.
In short, Project 2025 is a policy roadmap to implement far-right ideological dominance through legal…structural…and bureaucratic means. It’s smart. It’s detailed. And it’s terrifying.
So where is the full-throated Democratic push to stop it?
A handful of billboards? A few campaign speeches? That’s not going to cut it.
The public barely knows this plan exists…and the party that should be sounding the alarm has largely relegated it to a footnote.
The GOP is preparing for a hostile takeover of American democracy—and the Democrats are acting on a level of handing out flyers.
2. The Cult of Norms Is Killing Us
Democratic leadership continues to operate under a delusion: that norms… institutions…and civility can protect the nation from authoritarianism.
This fantasy has already been disproven.
Donald Trump attempted a coup. He tried to overturn a lawful election. He incited violence at the Capitol. He hoarded classified documents. He continues to threaten judges…witnesses…and opponents.
And yet—he the President of the United States of America…untouched by meaningful institutional resistance for years.
Meanwhile, Democratic leaders seem more concerned with appearing reasonable than being effective.
They worry about blowback…about optics…about staying “above the fray.” But while they hesitate…the other side mobilizes with zero shame or restraint.
Trump and his allies use every legal loophole…every media lever…every procedural trick they can find. They intimidate prosecutors. They install loyalists in state legislatures. They sue. They countersue. They fundraise off their indictments.
And what do Democrats do? They hold hearings. Issue statements. Express “grave concern.”
If we keep fighting fire with press releases….we’re going to burn down the republic.
3. The Legal Double Standard—and the Cost of Not Fighting Back
The Republican legal machine is ruthless and relentless. Whether it's Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton launching lawsuits to restrict voting rights…or Trump's lawyers manipulating delays to dodge accountability, the GOP treats lawfare as just another tool for victory.
Democrats, meanwhile…continue to play defense—hoping that the institutions they revere will somehow self-correct.
Why didn’t Merrick Garland move faster to indict Trump for January 6th? Why haven’t Democratic state attorneys general brought coordinated charges against those attempting to subvert democracy in their own states? Why wasn’t every Project 2025 policy met with preemptive litigation?
The party that defends democracy should be wielding the law to preserve it—not surrendering it out of fear of appearing “too political.”
Republicans have long understood what Democrats refuse to: legal systems can be used not just to resolve conflict…but to create it—to wear down your opponents…to run out the clock…to control the narrative.
Until Democrats embrace legal aggression….they will continue to bring ballots to gunfights.
4. The Failure to Message Like Democracy Depends on It
Another critical failure is messaging.
Democrats have not just failed to act with urgency—they’ve failed to communicate it.
Too often, their arguments are procedural…technocratic…or bogged down in nuance.
They speak of "norms" and "guardrails" while the GOP speaks of power and vengeance. They quote the Constitution while MAGA influencers rally millions with memes and threats.
The right speaks in apocalyptic terms: “They’re coming for your children.” “The deep state is real.” “The election was stolen.”
Lies, yes—but effective ones.
Meanwhile, the Democrats talk about safeguarding the EPA.
We need messaging that tells the truth with moral clarity and emotional resonance:
Trump is a threat to democracy.
Project 2025 is a fascist blueprint.
If we don’t stop this now, we may not get another chance.
This isn’t alarmism. It’s reality. And it’s time to say it—loudly…consistently…and without apology.
5. The Base Knows It. The Party Won’t Admit It.
Frustration is growing—not from the right…but from within the Democratic base.
I lifted this from Rep. Jason Crow, a Colorado Democrat…in an article I read earlier today
Many of the party’s most loyal voters…organizers…and activists feel abandoned. They see the threat clearly. They know what’s coming. And they’re tired of being told to “stay calm” and “trust the process” while the other side is setting the process on fire.
This is dangerous. Not just electorally…but existentially. It’s bullshit…and they can smell it without mistaking it for a delicious dessert.
Because democracy doesn’t survive just on elections—it survives on belief. When people stop believing that those in power will protect the system…they disengage. And disengagement is fatal in the face of authoritarianism.
The Democratic leadership must be honest with its voters: We are in an emergency. This is not normal. And yes—extraordinary times demand extraordinary action.
6. What Playing to Win Looks Like
So what should Democrats be doing? Here’s a start:
Litigate everything. I mean every Goddamn thing. Every unconstitutional piece of Project 2025 should be met with legal firepower…before it’s enacted.
Purge bad actors. Use every ethical and legal tool to remove election deniers from positions of power.
Nationalize the stakes. Make every race—local…state…or federal—a referendum on democracy itself.
Fight media disinfo. Build rapid-response teams to counter lies with facts in real time.
Activate the base. Treat organizers…not donors…as the frontline of defense. Invest accordingly.
Stop apologizing for defending democracy. This is not about “playing dirty.” It’s f*cking about survival.
7. The Cost of Refusing to Wake Up
If the Democratic Party fails to adapt…the cost won’t just be losing the 2024 or 2026 elections. It will be losing the entire democratic framework those elections depend on.
Imagine DOJ leadership handpicked for loyalty to Trump…not the Constitution. You don’t have to imagine it; it’s already happened multiple times.
Imagine press freedom choked by executive orders and license manipulation.
Imagine the National Guard deployed to suppress protests in blue states.
Imagine future elections run by MAGA loyalists…with results they alone decide are “legitimate.” As things stand right now, that will be the case for the 2026 midterms.
This isn’t speculative fiction. It’s the playbook.
The question isn’t whether the Republican Party will try to implement it. The question is whether Democrats will finally decide to stop them.
8. What You—Yes, You—Can Do
If you vote blue…this isn’t just about what “they” should do. It’s about what you should do.
Demand more from your elected officials; a hell of a lot more.
Refuse to support those who normalize extremism for “bipartisanship.”
Organize. Donate. Show up.
Talk to your neighbors. Share the stakes.
Hold your own side accountable—because that’s what real patriots do.
Democracy isn’t a spectator sport.
And silence—especially when it’s your own party falling short—is a form of surrender.
To the Democrats Who Call Me a “Defeatist”
Any time I’ve written short 300-character posts about this topic on social media, I’ve always had the haters who ask, “What the hell do you want them to do?! They’re doing all they can!” and then unfollow me.
To those who will likely read this from a link on social media who might want to ask me the same question…I hear your frustration…but that question reveals the problem.
If we accept that this is “all they can do,” then we’re conceding defeat in real time. We are.
This isn’t about demanding magic or perfection—it’s about demanding they fight like democracy is actually at stake.
That means using every legal tool…every platform…every ounce of political capital not just to react…but to proactively block authoritarianism.
Playing it safe won’t stop fascism. Hoping the courts save us won’t protect voting rights. A party that truly understands the stakes doesn't shrug and retreat behind “we’re doing our best”—it breaks the damn mold.
It BREAKS the frigging mold!
If democracy and freedom are to be preserved…it must be this way. Any other way will end in a brutal defeat.
The Clock Is Ticking
The Republican Party has chosen its path. It is not a party of ideas. It is a party of vengeance…authoritarianism…and power at any cost.
The Democratic Party still has a choice: to fight like hell—or to lose quietly.
We must demand the former. Our country depends on it.
Because if we don’t wake up soon…we won’t be writing about how democracy died.
We’ll be living in what replaced it. I don’t want that. Neither do you.

Our Congress reps and Senators must feel the heat at every opportunity. They must acknowledge the importance of the moment. Government functions are no longer normal.
I cannot say enough how I hate hearing Democrats talk about 'we're approaching a constitutional crisis" -- we are in a constitutional crisis *right now* and the sooner we realize it the better off we will all be. Thanks for this column, I think you read my mind. JK. Our representatives need to stop bringing a spoon to a knife fight.
