On Monday…I told you the hard truth: the exhaustion is the strategy. They’re not trying to beat you. They’re trying to wear you down until you go quiet.
Today…I’m giving you the fix. The actual…concrete practice…that I use to stay standing when the flood comes.
No slogans. No “just think positive” …I’d never insult you with that. A tool. Something you can put to work before you finish your coffee.
It comes in two parts. Together…they’ve kept me on my feet through stretches I wasn’t sure I’d get through. Let me hand them to you.
Part one: the cut
Here’s what’s drowning you. It isn’t the news. It’s that you’re carrying all of it…and almost none of it is actually yours to carry.
So…every morning…before the phone…before the feed…you make one cut. You take everything sitting on your chest…and you sort it into two piles.
Pile one: what I can actually touch today.
Pile two: everything else.
That’s it. That’s the cut.
The vote you’ll cast. The call you’ll make to a representative. The neighbor you’ll check on. The dollars you’ll give. The words you’ll write. The kid you’ll raise to be decent. Those go in pile one. Those are yours. They’re real. Your hands can reach them.
The court ruling three states away. What some senator said on television. The latest thing designed to make your stomach drop. The outcome of an election eight months out. Real? Yes. Heavy? God, yes.
Yours to carry today? No.
And…here’s the move that changes your life: you are allowed to set pile two down.
Not forever. Not with your head in the sand. You’ll pick the relevant parts back up when there’s actually something to do with them. But…you do not have to carry the entire weight of a nation’s crisis…in your body, at 6 a.m….when there is not one single thing you can do about most of it before lunch.
You were never meant to hold it all. No one can. That crushing, all-of-it weight you’ve been dragging around? It was never yours. Put it down.
Carry what’s yours. Set down the rest. Every single morning.
Part two: the floor
Now the second part…and this is the one that saves you on the worst days.
You need a Daily Floor. A non-negotiable minimum you protect no matter what, especially when everything’s on fire.
Here’s the thinking. On good days…you do a lot. Great. But…resilience isn’t built on good days. It’s built on what you refuse to let collapse on the bad ones…the days you’re flattened, hopeless, sure it’s all pointless.
On those days…you don’t need to be a hero. You just need to not hit zero.
So you decide…right now…while you’re calm…the handful of things that keep you a functioning human.
Mine are simple. Four things:
Sleep I actually protect, because everything…my judgment, my mood, my hope… is downstream of it. I get 7 hours a night…no matter what. It’s THE priority.
One thing for my body. A walk. Thirty pushups. A stretch. Not necessarily a workout. A rep. Proof I’m still in here.
One real human connection. A text that isn’t about the news. A call. A face. Not the feed…a person.
One thing that’s mine. Music…a page of a book…ten minutes outside. One small thing the chaos doesn’t get to touch.
That’s my floor. Four things. On my best day…I sail past it. On my worst day…the day I can’t do anything…I do those four, and only those four…and I call it a win. Because it is.
Your floor will look different. Build your own. Keep it small; small enough that you can hit it on the day you feel like you can’t get off the couch. If it’s too ambitious…it’s not a floor. A floor is the thing you never fall below.
Miss everything else. Let the ambitious to-do list burn. But…you hit your floor.
Because a person who never hits zero…never has to climb all the way back up from nothing. And that…not heroics…not adrenaline…is how you’re still standing a year from now when the sprinters have all dropped.
Put it to work today
Two moves. That’s the whole practice.
The cut: carry what’s yours today…set down the rest.
The floor: protect your non-negotiable minimum…no matter what.
Do the cut this morning. Build your floor tonight…write the list down…actually write it…four or five things…small enough to survive your darkest day.
That’s it. That’s the cornerstone. It’s not fancy. The things that hold under real weight rarely are…that’s the whole idea behind the name Bedrock.
They’re betting you’ll carry everything until you collapse.
So…carry what’s yours. Set down the rest. And never…ever hit zero.
I’ll see you Friday…and we’ll close the week strong.
