The Seat at the Table

An Israeli prime minister walked into the White House Situation Room with a plan for war. Seventeen days later…we were in one. Here’s who was in the room…and who wasn’t.

Let me tell you about a chair.

Not a fancy chair. Just a regular leather chair at the head of a mahogany conference table. In a room in the basement of the White House.

You’ve seen that room in photographs. The Situation Room. It’s where presidents watch raids unfold and decide whether to send young Americans into harm’s way.

And that chair at the head of the table? It belongs to the President of the United States.

Always.

Except on February 11th of this year…

Who Sat Where

According to a detailed report in The New York Times, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s black SUV pulled up to the White House a little before 11 a.m. that day.

He was brought inside with little ceremony and kept out of view of reporters.

He went downstairs for what the Times called a highly classified presentation on Iran.

Now here’s the part that stopped me cold.

President Trump did not take his usual seat at the head of the table. He sat on one side, facing the screens on the wall. Netanyahu sat directly across from him.

And…on the big screen behind Netanyahu…appeared the director of Mossad, David Barnea, along with Israeli military officials.

Think about what that looks like.

A foreign leader…framed by his own spy chief and generals…like a wartime commander surrounded by his team. Inside our war room.

Netanyahu spent about an hour making his case. According to the reporting…he argued that Iran’s government was ripe for collapse. That its missile program could be destroyed in a few weeks. That Iran would be too weak to shut the Strait of Hormuz. That protests, helped along by Israeli agents on the ground and a heavy bombing campaign…would topple the regime.

He even floated names of people who could take power afterward…including Reza Pahlavi, the exiled son of Iran’s last shah.

It was a sales pitch.

A Quick Correction (Because That’s the Deal)

Before I go any further…I owe you something.

I first heard about this meeting in a long interview between Tucker Carlson and journalist Max Blumenthal. (If you want to be able to write intelligently about a topic, you watch/listen to everything you can…even the people you can’t stand. Otherwise, you’re just gathering content to cheerlead with. Cheerleading does not equal the information your readers need most.)

Blumenthal put the date at February 3rd and said Netanyahu sat at the head of the table while Trump sat off to the side.

That’s close. But…it’s not what the reporting shows.

The date was February 11th. And Netanyahu sat across from Trump…not at the head. Trump moved off the head seat…but nobody else took it.

Does that change the big picture? Not much.

But…it matters. Because if I’m going to ask you to trust me…over the networks…I’d better get the details right. Even the small ones. Especially the small ones.

That’s the deal between you and me.

“Farcical”

Now here’s where it gets interesting.

You’d think a pitch like that would get picked apart by our own people. And…according to the Times…it did.

In the days after that meeting, senior U.S. officials sharply questioned key parts of Netanyahu’s plan. The regime-change scenarios in particular. Some of them reportedly called those scenarios “farcical.”

One word they used…"Bullshit." According to the New York Times reporting (as summarized by Ynet), U.S. officials described the regime-change scenarios in Netanyahu's plan as "farcical" and "bullshit."

And…it wasn’t just a few skeptical aides.

Around the same time…U.S. intelligence agencies concluded that a major U.S.-Israeli war would not bring regime change…and would likely harden the government in Tehran instead.

Let me say that again, slower.

Our own intelligence community told the President the plan wouldn’t work.

According to the reporting…Trump rejected the regime-change fantasy…but bought the rest. He was drawn to the idea of landing a crushing blow against Iran’s leadership and military. And on February 28th, seventeen days after that Situation Room meeting…the strikes began.

So here’s the question that keeps my head humming.

If the President’s own advisers thought the plan was a joke…and his own intelligence agencies said it would backfire…

Who was he listening to?

Team A and Team B

Now…fast forward to the night the bombs started falling.

Trump wasn’t in the White House. He was at Mar-a-Lago…in Palm Beach…watching the operation from a makeshift war room behind heavy curtains.

The White House released photos. Trump at a table in a white “USA” cap. Next to him, Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Chief of Staff Susie Wiles. CIA Director John Ratcliffe was there too. So was Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth.

Call them Team A.

Meanwhile…900 miles away…in the actual Situation Room in Washington…sat Vice President JD Vance. Next to him, Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent. Energy Secretary Chris Wright. They were patched in by secure phone line.

Call them…Team B.

Now…in fairness…there’s an official explanation. Vance’s spokesperson said he stayed in Washington because of security protocols meant to keep operational secrecy and avoid having the president and vice president in the same place away from the White House.

That’s a real rule. It makes sense.

But…look closer at who ended up on which team.

Vance has never hidden his skepticism about foreign wars. According to the Times, he didn’t oppose the strike…but he intensely questioned the Joint Chiefs chairman and the CIA director at a planning meeting just two days before the attack.

And Gabbard? She built her political career warning Americans against exactly this kind of war.

So…the two most prominent voices of restraint in the administration…were in a different city…on a phone line…while the decision-makers sat around a table in Palm Beach.

Coincidence? Maybe.

But…I’ve been around long enough to know this: in any organization…where you sit tells you how much you matter.

Why This Should Bother You

Let me be clear about something.

I’m not telling you some foreign government secretly controls the President. There’s no evidence of that…and I’m not going to pretend there is. With the Jack Hopkins Now Newsletter, I pride myself on having sources for my claims.

The President of the United States made this decision. He owns it.

But…here’s what the record shows.

A foreign leader was given a stage in our most sensitive room…to make a hard sell for war. Our own experts pushed back. Our own intelligence agencies warned it would backfire. And…the people most likely to say “slow down” weren’t in the room when it counted.

That’s not a conspiracy.

That’s a failure of the system that’s supposed to protect you from exactly this.

Because the people who pay for a war…aren’t the ones sitting in either room. It’s the kid from a small town stationed at a base you’ve never heard of. It’s you…at the gas pump. It’s your grandkids…paying off the debt.

And…not one of them got a chair at that table.

The Bottom Line

Here’s what I keep coming back to.

On February 11th…the most powerful man in the world…gave up his seat at the head of his own table.

It’s a small thing. A chair.

But small things tell you big truths…if you’re willing to look.

The question isn’t who sat in that chair.

The question is who should have been sitting there…and why they weren’t.

My Two Cents (And I’ve Spent a Lot of Time Earning Them)

Alright.

I’ve given you the documented facts…with sources. You can check every one of them.

Now…I’m going to give you my informed opinions on the matter. These are my read of the evidence, not established fact. I’ll tell you why I think what I think…and you can decide whether I’ve earned your agreement.

Fair enough?

Let’s go.

Opinion #1: The leak is the real story.

Here’s something almost nobody is asking.

How does The New York Times know where everyone sat in a classified meeting in the Situation Room?

Somebody told them. Probably several somebodies.

And…people who sit in that room don’t leak details like that by accident. When officials start telling reporters that they called a plan “farcical”…months after the war started…that’s not gossip.

That’s a paper trail.

My educated guess? Some of the people in that room saw where this was heading…and they wanted history to know they objected. It’s what officials do when they think a decision is going to age badly. They make sure their fingerprints aren’t on it.

Remember Iraq? After the weapons of mass destruction never turned up…George Tenet spent years explaining that his famous “slam dunk” line had been taken out of context. Everybody wanted to be on record as the one who had doubts.

When the leaks start…the people inside already know how the story ends.

Opinion #2: This is a textbook case of groupthink.

In 1972, a Yale psychologist named Irving Janis studied how brilliant people make catastrophic decisions. His main case study was the Bay of Pigs…the failed 1961 invasion of Cuba.

Kennedy’s team was loaded with smart people. And…they walked straight into disaster.

Janis found a pattern. The group shrinks. Dissenters get sidelined or go quiet. Outside warnings get dismissed. Everybody assumes that since nobody’s objecting…everybody must agree.

He called it groupthink.

Now…look at our story. The intelligence agencies said it would backfire…and that warning apparently didn’t carry the day. The skeptics were in another city on a phone line. The inner circle was small…loyal…and in one room at a country club.

I’m not saying anyone was stupid. I’m saying the room was built to produce a “yes.”

And rooms like that…almost always do.

Opinion #3: Trump didn’t buy the plan. He bought the feeling.

This one’s more of a hunch…but hear me out.

Remember, the reporting says Trump rejected the regime-change fantasy. He didn’t believe Iran would collapse. So why say yes?

Because he wasn’t buying the outcome. He was buying the moment.

Every good salesman knows that people don’t buy products. They buy how the product makes them feel. Netanyahu didn’t need Trump to believe the whole pitch. He only needed Trump to want the blow…the image of decisive…overwhelming strength.

And…that’s exactly what the reporting says drew him in.

The best sales pitch in the world doesn’t convince you the product is perfect. It convinces you…that saying no…would make you look weak.

Opinion #4: Watch JD Vance.

Here’s my prediction…and…I’ll own it if I’m wrong. If you’ve been here long, you’ve seen me do exactly that.

The story that Vance “intensely questioned” the generals two days before the strike… didn’t get into the papers by accident either. That’s a man building his record for 2028.

If this war goes badly…and…you know the price at the pump says…it has…Vance will be the guy who can say, “I asked the hard questions.”

And…Rubio…who was at Mar-a-Lago…will own it either way.

The 2028 Republican primary may have started in that Situation Room. They just didn’t know it yet.

The bottom line on my opinions:

Nobody controls a president but the voters…and his own judgment. I don’t believe in puppet strings.

Influence from outside? Outside pressure? Even…well…some extortion from someone else? Quite possible…yes. No question about it. But…ultimately, I believe the voters…and a president’s own decisions…represent the pinnacle of the final path.

But…I do believe in rooms. Who’s in them. Who isn’t. And…who gets to make the first pitch before the decision. Everything I know about psychology, sociology, and human behavior suggests I would be smart to keep believing in those things.

On February 11th…the first pitch belonged to a foreign leader. Benjamin Netanyahu.

We have a name for why that matters. It’s called the primacy effect. The first persuasive case you hear tends to anchor your thinking…and every argument that comes after…has to fight uphill against it.

Netanyahu didn’t need the last word. He needed the first one.

Everything our own people said afterward…the doubts, the warnings…was arguing against a decision that may have already been half made.

And the people who said “this won’t work”…turned out to be the ones we should have been listening to.
