Jack…this is concerning. I am not in panic mode, but am mildly concerned…and will “keep an eye” on this story as it develops. Thank you for the additional information surrounding it!
By no means would I tell someone, "Pssst. Nonsense. Pay it no mind at all!"
In a world where countries like the USA invade Venezuela, kidnap the leader, and claim the oil as their own, or where Russia decides, "Hey, I want that country, so I'll kill as many people as needed to get it," should we ever think that a country lying about a potential plague pathogen...is out of the realm of BS.
In the fall of 2019 I followed the stories coming out of China about a “new virus” that was spreading rapidly….paid attention and when January 2020 arrived I started prepping us for it’s arrival on our shores. We were ready when March 3rd arrived and our Governor, Newsom, “locked down” our state…as were our kids!
One must ask exactly why the technician was even handing the bacteria. Just what's really going on there? This isn't comforting given the history of the USSR and their bioweapons programs.
Yes, and a former KGB officer, bloodlusting dictator..." might" not be the most trusted controller of news coming out of Russia. Things like that...make this one trickier to pin down.
Respectfully, that's not my point, Doctor. For what purpose? What project was it intended for? The disease is easily killed by multiple antibiotics, so researching for a cure doesn't seem plausible to me.
The reason we are all hesitant to ignore this story is the seriousness of the plague, of course, but the other reason is that the past has proven that Russia and China reporting of pandemics or fault is less than stellar. My worry is that we would become the same under Kennedy’s leadership. He wanted to hide a measles death. Faith in his leadership is missing. That is my biggest concern right now.
Mary Ann... thanks for pointing out why this story has legs... and it ISN'T the bacterium.
Plague is treatable...and...transmits badly.
What makes Irkutsk worth watching...is that NOBODY can independently verify ANYTHING coming out of it.
On the domestic concern...I'll offer this: lean on mandatory reporting of notifiable conditions, independent state and local health departments, WHO obligations, clinicians who talk to reporters.
Those are what made Irkutsk visible at ALL...through the Russian versions LEAKING...rather than holding.
That's the MEASURABLE thing. Do the data releases stay public...do the career epidemiologists stay. If they ERODE, that's a story...and I'd want the evidence before writing it.
Thanks for reading closely enough to push. You bring great questions and thoughts to the community!
Here’s what doesn’t add up for me: You have a lab technician dealing with respiratory pathogens. Wouldn’t she be wearing a mask and gloves at the bare minimum, though she would more likely be wearing some sort of hazmat suit? Test tubes usually hold liquids, yet she got infected. There should be a shit ton of safety protocols that get activated and lock the place down.

The story warrants watching as it develops.

That dog won’t hunt, Monsignor.
Todd...you're right that it doesn't close.
Y. pestis is BSL-3 — a tube breaking inside the cabinet should NOT infect anyone. And exposure should trigger prophylaxis within HOURS.
She died seven days later. Either protocol FAILED...or...the broken-tube story is NOT what happened. We don't know which...for now.
Sharp thinking, my friend.
