If Democrats Get Crushed in the Midterms…Here’s What Could Happen Next
And why millions of Americans still don’t understand how fast the ground beneath them could shift.
The Jack Hopkins Now Newsletter #901: Wednesday, May 20th, 2026
There’s a dangerous assumption floating around America right now.
It sounds reasonable.
Comforting, even.
And historically…dead wrong.
The assumption is this:
“Even if things get ugly politically…our institutions will protect us.”
That belief is the psychological equivalent of standing in front of a dam with tiny cracks forming across the concrete…
…while insisting:
“Relax. It’s been standing for decades.”
But history has an ugly habit of humiliating people who mistake normalcy for permanence.
And if Democrats get obliterated in the midterms…
If Republicans hold the presidency…
If the House falls hard…
If the Senate stays aligned…
Then the conversation in America changes overnight.
Not gradually.
Not theoretically.
Overnight.
Because at that point, the people surrounding Donald Trump will no longer view themselves as temporary occupants of power.
They will view themselves as a movement that has finally removed the last meaningful restraints standing in their way.
And that’s when Project 2025 stops being a political talking point…
…and starts becoming an operational blueprint.
The Real Goal Isn’t Winning Elections Anymore
Most Americans still misunderstand what’s happening.
They think this fight is primarily about:
Taxes,
Immigration,
Culture wars,
Inflation,
Transgender athletes,
DEI,
or partisan politics.
No.
Those are surface-level emotional mobilizers.
The deeper battle…is about institutional control.
Specifically:
Who controls the machinery of the American government once power is captured?
That’s the game now.
And Project 2025 is fundamentally built around one central belief:
“Trump’s first term failed because too many independent institutions slowed him down.”
So the next phase is designed around removing those obstacles before resistance can organize.
That’s the key.
Not persuasion.
Not compromise.
Not coalition-building.
Control.
And if the midterms become a bloodbath for Democrats…
…the people designing this machinery…will interpret it as national permission.
The Most Dangerous Word in Politics
You know what the most dangerous word in politics is?
Mandate.
Because once a movement convinces itself it has a mandate…
…almost anything becomes justifiable.
Watch carefully what would happen after a crushing Democratic defeat.
You’d immediately hear:
“The American people have spoken.”
“The resistance has been rejected.”
“This is what democracy looks like.”
“The bureaucracy must obey elected leadership.”
“The administrative state has no democratic legitimacy.”
That framing matters enormously.
Because before power systems change behavior…
they change language.
Language prepares populations psychologically for escalation.
And once enough Americans accept the idea that opposition itself is illegitimate…
…the acceleration begins.
What Project 2025 Actually Represents
A lot of Americans hear “Project 2025” and think it’s just another campaign platform.
It isn’t.
It’s closer to a corporate takeover manual for the federal government.
It is an attempt to answer one question:
“How do we make sure federal institutions never obstruct this movement again?”
And the answer revolves around one thing above all else:
Personnel.
You don’t need to rewrite the Constitution overnight to transform a country.
You just need to control:
Who gets hired,
Who gets fired,
Who gets promoted,
Who gets investigated,
and who becomes afraid.
That’s how systems change.
Quietly at first.
Then all at once.
The Purge Phase
This is the part most Americans are not emotionally prepared for.
Because they still imagine government workers as protected professionals insulated from politics.
But the long-term goal behind Schedule F-style restructuring is simple:
Turn large portions of the federal workforce into politically removable employees.
Read that again.
Because if that power expands aggressively…
then tens of thousands of federal workers suddenly understand a terrifying new reality:
“Align…or disappear.”
That affects:
DOJ
FBI
DHS
Intelligence agencies
Scientific agencies
Labor oversight
Environmental enforcement
Education systems
Economic regulators
And here’s the critical point:
You do not need mass firings to transform behavior.
Fear does the work for you.
Once people believe:
Promotions depend on loyalty,
Pissent risks career destruction,
Investigations can become political,
and resistance could make them targets…
…the culture changes instantly.
Most institutional collapse…doesn’t happen because everybody becomes evil.
It happens…because enough people become quiet.
The Justice Department Could Become the Real Battleground
This is where things could become genuinely dangerous.
Not cinematic.
Not dramatic.
Dangerous.
Because once the Justice Department becomes perceived as politically aligned enforcement rather than semi-independent law enforcement…
…the entire emotional climate of a country changes.
Imagine living in a nation where:
Prosecutors increasingly target political enemies,
Allies receive protection,
Investigations become selectively amplified,
Critics face escalating scrutiny,
Inspectors general lose power,
Whistleblowers become examples.
Now imagine trying to speak freely inside that environment.
Most people picture authoritarianism incorrectly.
They imagine soldiers kicking down doors.
But modern democratic erosion usually works differently.
It creates selective fear.
A few examples.
A few public punishments.
A few destroyed careers.
A few terrifying investigations.
And millions of ordinary citizens silently decide:
“I’d better keep my head down.”
That’s how free societies psychologically shrink.
The Media War Would Intensify Fast
One of the first things authoritarian-leaning movements do is redefine independent media as enemies of the nation itself.
Not critics.
Enemies.
That distinction matters.
Because once journalism becomes framed as sabotage…
…pressure campaigns become easier to justify.
And in a worst-case trajectory, you could see:
Regulatory pressure,
Credential restrictions,
Lawsuit warfare,
Advertiser intimidation,
Coordinated propaganda ecosystems,
AI-generated disinformation floods,
Influencer amplification networks,
Loyalty-based access systems.
But the deepest danger isn’t censorship itself.
It’s exhaustion.
Information exhaustion.
Reality fragmentation.
People become so overwhelmed they stop trying to determine what’s true altogether.
And…exhausted populations are easier to govern.
Because confused people eventually surrender decision-making to whichever authority feels emotionally safest.
Blue States Could Become Political Combat Zones
If Democrats are crushed nationally…
…federal pressure on resistant states could escalate hard.
Especially around:
Immigration,
Protest activity,
universities,
Federal funding,
Elections,
Policing,
and education policy.
Many Americans don’t fully understand how much leverage the federal government has through money alone.
Worst-case scenario?
Blue states increasingly become treated almost like internal opposition territories.
Not officially.
But operationally.
And the pressure wouldn’t necessarily arrive through dramatic declarations.
It would come through:
Investigations,
Funding threats,
Agency actions,
Compliance requirements,
Targeted enforcement,
Federal lawsuits,
Administrative punishment.
Again:
Modern democratic backsliding rarely announces itself with fanfare.
It arrives disguised as “procedure.”
Elections Would Still Exist
This is one of the biggest misconceptions people have.
The realistic danger is NOT:
“America suddenly cancels elections.”
That’s not how modern authoritarian systems usually function.
They keep elections.
They just gradually tilt the field.
This is what political scientists call:
competitive authoritarianism.
Where:
Elections occur,
Opposition parties exist,
Media technically survives…
…but the system becomes increasingly unequal.
And if Democrats were badly defeated in the midterms, the confidence to reshape election systems aggressively could rise dramatically.
That could include:
Voter-roll purges,
Intensified gerrymandering,
Election-board takeovers,
Prosecution threats,
Certification manipulation battles,
Selective federal interventions,
Administrative restrictions.
And here’s the terrifying part:
Most of it would be defended publicly as:
“election integrity.”
That’s how institutional restructuring always works.
The language sounds reasonable…
…until the cumulative effect becomes undeniable.
The Cultural Restructuring Would Move Shockingly Fast
This part could happen faster than almost anything else.
Why?
Because enormous cultural change can occur through funding leverage and executive power alone.
You could see escalating pressure on:
Universities,
Accreditation systems,
Public schools,
DEI programs,
Scientific institutions,
Libraries,
Museums,
Public broadcasting,
Federal grants,
Arts organizations.
And all of it would be framed as:
Patriotism,
Restoring American values,
Eliminating corruption,
Fighting indoctrination.
Understand something important:
Every major political movement…believes its own moral justification.
That’s what makes these moments dangerous.
Because people convinced they are “saving the nation” become willing to use powers they once would’ve considered unthinkable.
The Protest Environment Could Harden Rapidly
This is another area Americans underestimate badly.
If political polarization deepens further after a Democratic collapse…
…public dissent itself could increasingly be reframed as destabilization.
Potentially leading to:
Harsher protest laws,
Expanded surveillance,
Militarized policing responses,
Terrorism rhetoric,
Increased monitoring,
Aggressive prosecutions.
And once again…
…the system would not need mass arrests.
It would only need enough examples…to create widespread deterrence.
Because fear…spreads socially faster than policy ever can.
The Real Danger Isn’t Trump Alone
This is critical.
The biggest danger is not one man.
It’s the normalization of a governing philosophy.
Because once enough institutions adapt themselves around:
Loyalty,
Retaliation,
Ideological enforcement,
and concentrated executive power…
…the system begins reshaping itself automatically.
That’s the part people fail to grasp.
Strongmen…matter less than the ecosystem built around them.
And…ecosystems…can outlive the individual who created them.
How Quickly Could This Happen?
Much faster than most Americans believe.
Not because tanks roll through cities.
Not because democracy vanishes overnight.
But because:
Executive power is already massive,
Congress is increasingly dysfunctional,
Institutions rely heavily on norms,
and polarization weakens collective resistance.
A lot of Americans still imagine democratic collapse as a dramatic Hollywood event.
Historically?
It’s usually administrative.
Bureaucratic.
Procedural.
Legalistic.
Which makes it harder to emotionally recognize…while it’s happening.
The most dangerous phase is always the normalization phase.
The moment people start saying:
“Well…this is just how things are now.”
But Here’s the Part Many Fear-Based Narratives Leave Out
Worst-case scenarios are not destiny.
And that matters.
Because panic creates paralysis.
America still has:
State governments,
Independent courts,
Journalists,
Unions,
Civil society,
Nonprofit infrastructure,
Local activism,
Constitutional protections,
Elections,
and millions of politically engaged citizens.
And history also shows something else:
Overreach often creates backlash.
Power coalitions fracture.
Economic pain changes loyalties.
Internal rivalries emerge.
Authoritarian movements are not invincible.
In fact…they often appear strongest…right before internal instability begins.
But…none of that matters if people psychologically surrender before the real fight even starts.
And that’s why the next phase matters so much.
Because the question is no longer simply:
“What if this happens?”
The question is:
“What do Americans do NOW if they want to stop it?”
The Paid Subscriber Report I’m Preparing Right Now
In the forthcoming paid subscriber report…
…I’m going much further than diagnosis.
I’m outlining two detailed operational plans.
Not emotional slogans.
Not empty “stay hopeful” rhetoric.
Actual frameworks.
Plan #1: The Midterm Counteroffensive
A detailed roadmap for:
Where Democrats are most vulnerable,
How messaging must change,
What psychological mistakes keep getting repeated,
How local pressure campaigns should operate,
What issues actually move persuadable voters,
How to rebuild turnout energy,
and what winning would realistically require from ordinary citizens over the next 12–18 months.
This section will be brutally honest.
Because magical thinking…is how democracies sleepwalk into disaster.
Plan #2: Psychological Resilience for the Unthinkable
This may be even more important.
Because millions of Americans are already showing signs of:
Emotional exhaustion,
Doom scrolling,
Learned helplessness,
Chronic anxiety,
Political trauma,
Cognitive overload.
And if conditions worsen…
…many people will psychologically collapse long before any political outcome is finalized.
So I’m laying out:
Mental resilience systems,
Emotional stabilization strategies,
Information-discipline frameworks,
Nervous-system protection habits,
Community reinforcement tactics,
and practical methods for staying functional under prolonged uncertainty.
Not denial.
Not fantasy.
Resilience.
Because if the unthinkable happens…
…the people who stay psychologically steady will become the most important people in the country.
The next phase of American history may be turbulent beyond anything most living Americans have experienced.
But turbulence does not automatically equal defeat.
And understanding the terrain early…
…is still one of the greatest advantages a citizen can have.
#HoldFast
Back soon.

P.S.
Most societies do not recognize democratic erosion while it’s happening.
They recognize it years later…
…after the new system already feels permanent.
That’s why this moment matters so much.
Because the people paying attention now are not “alarmists.”
They are early.
And history repeatedly shows…that being early feels exactly like being crazy…until suddenly everyone else catches up.
P.P.S.
The forthcoming paid subscriber report is not designed to scare you.
It’s designed to prepare you.
There’s a massive difference.
Fear without preparation creates paralysis.
But clarity with preparation creates resilience.
And in unstable times…
…resilient people become extraordinarily powerful.

This is making me feel sick to my stomach. I find it impossible to understand why so many republicans are willing to forsake our 250 year old democracy. And then to see Republican senators who have lost their primaries FINALLY vote with the Democrats to stop the madness? I hope it’s not too little too late. That just makes me insane. They KNOW what’s right and yet continue to vote along party lines just to keep their jobs. That is so utterly cowardly and disgusting. I couldn’t understand why they allowed his 2016 candidacy in the first place. And here we are. 🤬
The republicans will cheat. They cheat in every election.
