As a teenager, I remember the long afternoons and nights (and often ALL night) working on a hay crew in the rural Midwest. A farmer would hire a hay crew to pick up the small bales of hay that were spaced out in the pastures by the hundreds, toss them on a wagon, stack them, haul them to the barn, unload them, and restack them inside the barn and out of the elements.

These bales were approximately 16” wide x 19-21” inches long rectangles that would held together by two strands of baling twine running lengthways. Depending on the moisture content of the hay, the bales would weigh between 65 -110 lbs. each. You would wind up handling each bale at least twice.
