He Blinked.
He Blinked.
The Jack Hopkins Now Newsletter #853: Tuesday, April 7, 2026
This morning…Donald Trump told the world a whole civilization would die tonight.
Tonight…he suspended the bombing.
Let’s be precise about what just happened. Because…the spin is already starting…and you deserve the unvarnished read.
At approximately 6 p.m. Eastern…less than two hours before his own “final” deadline …Trump posted on Truth Social…that he would suspend the bombing and attack of Iran for two weeks. Subject to Iran agreeing to completely…immediately…and safely reopen the Strait of Hormuz.
He credited Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Army Chief Field Marshal Asim Munir by name. He called Iran’s ten-point proposal…the same proposal a senior US official called “maximalist” this morning…the same proposal Trump himself called “not good enough” yesterday…a “workable basis on which to negotiate.”
Iran’s Foreign Minister confirmed acceptance within the hour. Safe passage through Hormuz, he said, would be possible for two weeks via coordination with Iranian armed forces.
The markets reacted instantly. Oil dropped more than 9% in thirty minutes. S&P futures jumped more than 1%.
The crisis…for now…is paused.
But pause…is not resolution. And what just happened…is not victory.
What Trump Is Calling It
“We have already met and exceeded all military objectives,” Trump wrote.
That is the official framing. That is what you will hear repeated on every friendly network for the next 48 hours.
Here is what actually happened.
Six weeks ago, the US and Israel launched a war they said would eliminate Iran’s nuclear threat…and open the Strait of Hormuz.
The Supreme Leader was killed on day one. Senior IRGC commanders were eliminated. Nuclear facilities were struck. Iran’s military was described by Trump himself as “obliterated.”
And…yet…as of this morning…Iran still controlled the Strait.
Still had its IRGC standing.
Still had a new Supreme Leader in place.
Still had 14 million volunteers answering the government’s call.
Still had enough leverage to extract a two-week pause from the most powerful military on earth…without firing a single concession in return.
Iran didn’t open the Strait as a concession. Iran agreed to allow safe passage via coordination with its own armed forces. The IRGC…the organization Trump designated as a terrorist group…is still the entity controlling who moves through those waters.
Read that carefully.
What This Reveals
The Iran war was sold to the American public as a short, decisive campaign.
Trump himself said it could last four to five weeks. We are now in week six. The Strait is still functionally closed. Global oil prices doubled. Gas hit $4.14 a gallon as a floor…not a ceiling. The IEA called this energy crisis more severe than 1973, 1979, and 2002 combined.
JPMorgan’s analysts said it plainly in a client note this week: Iran’s strategy was never to outgun the United States. It was to outlast it. To absorb punishment…keep the economic pressure building…and wait for the cost of continuing to outweigh the cost of stopping.
That’s exactly what happened tonight.
Trump set a deadline. Then another. Then another. Then the “final” one. And…when the final one arrived…Pakistan asked him to stand down…and he did.
That’s not a negotiating win. That’s a man who ran out of runway.
What Comes Next
Peace talks are scheduled for Friday in Islamabad. Vice President Vance is expected to lead the US delegation.
Iran’s ten-point proposal…which includes a permanent end to the war…full lifting of sanctions…and reconstruction of damaged infrastructure…is now the basis for those talks.
That is an extraordinarily ambitious starting point for a country whose military has supposedly been obliterated.
Iran’s statement after the ceasefire announcement claimed the US had accepted a framework that includes “continued Iranian control over the Strait of Hormuz.” The White House has not confirmed that language.
Watch that gap. It matters enormously.
Here’s what you need to hold onto right now.
A two-week ceasefire is not a deal. It is a pause in the pressure…during which both sides will try to lock in positions before the clock restarts. Iran will use these two weeks to regroup…reinforce…and negotiate from a position that just got significantly stronger.
The question hanging over every conversation in Islamabad on Friday is simple.
What did the United States actually win?
Stay sharp. This is far from over.
There’s more to this story than what you just read.
The gap between Trump’s language and Iran’s language in tonight’s ceasefire announcement…the deadline pattern that Tehran read correctly from day one…what every adversary from Pyongyang to Beijing learned tonight…and exactly what to watch in Islamabad on Friday.
It’s all in the paid expansion that goes out in a couple hours. And…if tonight matters to you…it’s worth the read.

Back soon.

P.S. The Strait is still not open. The IRGC is still standing. Iran's ten-point maximalist proposal is now the baseline for Friday's talks.
And…the man who said "WHO KNOWS?" this morning…is calling it a win tonight. Stay sharp. Because the people who know what actually happened…are already planning their next move.
