My head is spinning. How do we regular Americans stand a chance in this ongoing environment?

Jack Hopkins's avatar

Lynne...if your head's spinning, that means it's working right; that story is genuinely a lot to take in...and feeling small in front of it...is the HONEST reaction...NOT a weak one.

But...here's the part that's easy to miss: the whole machine in that article runs on regular people...deciding they're too small...too tired...or too overwhelmed to keep looking.

That's the ACTUAL fuel.

The cover-ups don't survive sunlight; they survive everybody glancing AWAY.

So...the unglamorous truth... is that staying awake...reading the spinny stuff...talking about it...REFUSING to get numb...is most of the fight.

You don't have to crack the case. You just have to be ONE MORE PERSON... who won't let it slide into the dark quietly.

That's not nothing. That's the WHOLE thing.

I appreciate your answers to our questions almost as much as your original article. Thank you for your dedication to helping us trudge through these hard times.

Welp, now I gotta watch it, I guess.

Rae...that's the spirit... dragged kicking and screaming into being informed. Haha.

It'll be waiting whenever you cave.

Intriguing article… I don’t have Netflix so I guess I’ll just reread the article. It was a lot to take in. I was familiar with some of it and some of the names I knew but not even close to all of it.

Guess I’ll mostly be in the dark or maybe I can rent the movie? I’ll check into that.

Thanks, Jack

Susan...rereading it is honestly the better move anyway.

It's the kind of story that gives up more on the SECOND pass...once the names start clicking into place. Don't feel like you're in the dark; if you caught even SOME of it the first time through...you're further along than most!

And...yes...look into renting it...these usually turn up on the regular rental platforms even when they're tied to one service.

If I track down exactly where... I'll let you know.

Thanks for reading so closely.

Thanks, Jack. I’m definitely going to read it again. Maybe more than once. The movie sounds interesting though, even if only partly accurate.

Your local library may have it available.

I’ll have to check on that. Thank you!

I don't want to watch it, but I guess I will eventually.

I did get a chuckle about this paragraph:

The review found no credible evidence PROMIS had been distributed to foreign governments…no evidence documents were destroyed…no evidence the DOJ had sabotaged Bason’s reappointment.

"No evidence documents were destroyed."

Somebody did a great job evidently.

Twelve scientists have recently disappeared of found dead under iffy circumstances. Jack, is this another of the famous cover ups?

Sue P...Ha!

That's the exact line that got me too, Sue. "No evidence documents were destroyed." Right.

Funny how the paper trail...always goes cold at the most convenient spot. Somebody earned their pension on that one.

On the scientists...I'm watching it closely.

Honest answer is nobody's connected the dots yet; even the FBI and House Oversight are still in "reviewing" mode.

Could be a run of terrible luck...could be something uglier. I'm not planting my flag till I see more...but you can bet I'll be digging.

And...yes...go watch the thing. It's worth the hour.

Thanks for the reality check, Jack. We sorta know that this stuff goes on, but what strikes me is how blatantly this regime is doing it. Congress, in some ideal future, needs to figure out how to put appropriate oversight on these bureaucracies so that they answer to the people. I hope wiser and more experienced people than I are keeping lists and writing legislation. We also can’t forget that unless a miracle occurs, donnie can veto everything. 67 Senators is almost impossible.

Not afraid, just disgusted 👹

Jack Hopkins's avatar

Rachel..."Not afraid, just disgusted"...that's exactly the right register...and don't let anyone talk you down from it.

Disgust that stays clear-eyed is useful; fear isn't.

You put your finger on the real fight.

NOT the headline of the week...but...the boring...durable work of building actual oversight into these agencies so they answer to people instead of to whoever's running them at the moment.

And you're right about the math; 67 in the Senate is a wall...and nothing structural moves until that changes. The honest read is that the next stretch...is about laying groundwork...not winning votes.

Which is why people like YOU... paying attention...matters more than it feels like it does.

Thanks for thinking out loud here.

This singes the edges of my memory. Thank you, I think, for a bit of context I never had decades ago.

The more you know, the less you trust any government department or entity, especially the DOJ. Question everything!
